Job Description

Church Organist/Pianist PURPOSE:
To enhance the services of worship through music.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Reports directly to the Music Coordinator and then to the Senior Pastor.
RESPONSIBILITIES/EXPECTATIONS
  • Provides organ/piano music and accompaniment for the Sunday morning Worship Services and all other Special Worship Services (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, etc.
).
This includes:
the Prelude, Hymns, Musical Response, Anthem/Solo Accompaniment, Offertory, Doxology, Communion, Postlude, and any special music.
  • Requires service the first and third Sundays each month in a traditional worship setting and choir rehearsals four times a month on Wednesday evenings (summer months of June, July, and August could be the exception depending on scheduling and needs of the worship services and requirements of the position).
  • Collaborates with the Choir Director/Music Coordinator and Senior Pastor.
  • Is present for Adult Choir rehearsals, prepares thoroughly for all rehearsals, and supports the Adult Choir Director in effective rehearsal techniques during rehearsals.
  • Rehearses sufficiently to maintain very high-quality music at the organ and piano.
  • Is on time for all rehearsals and services.
  • Selects solo music for the service (i.e. prelude, postlude, etc.).
  • Accompanies guest soloists as needed. Rehearses with and accompanies vocalists, instrumentalists, and small groups as scheduled for worship services throughout the year. Vocalists and instrumentalists will be required to provide accompaniments at least one week in advance. Typically, one or two short rehearsals the week of the service may be necessary.
  • After training, submits necessary information to the Worship Template by Tuesday at noon, including titles and composers of music.
  • Selects and purchases music for use in worship services (solo music, postlude, prelude, etc.); this music is to be paid for by the organist/pianist and shall be the possession of the organist and not the church).
  • Monitors the condition of the church organ and pianos and makes recommendations for repairs and tuning to the Music Coordinator.
  • Has the right of first refusal for weddings and funerals held at the church (there is a separate fee schedule outlined in wedding and funeral documents). The use of an organ by an outside organist for weddings and funerals may be permitted with approval of the Music Coordinator and/or Senior Pastor.
  • Works with the Adult Choir Director/Music Coordinator to secure a replacement organist/pianist or accompanist during periods of absence.
  • Seeks professional relationships with other church musicians and keeps abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through associations, continuing education, and professional church publications.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possesses high proficiency organ/piano performance skills for all worship services, special services, (preludes, postludes, offertories, communion, anthems, rehearsals and accompaniments, as well as solo works).
  • Has knowledge of pipe organ and piano parts and how they work.
  • Holds knowledge of traditional worship practices and the liturgical calendar, as well as theoretical understanding and respect for the church sufficient to appropriately select music for worship. If training is needed in this area, that can be arranged with the Music Coordinator.
  • Requires a minimum of a BA degree in a music related field.
  • Acts as a "team player" in a church setting, collaborating with all staff, musicians, and volunteers so that the music ministry is enhanced within the life of the church.
  • Must be available on holidays such as Christmas Eve, Easter, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and other special services as identified by the Music Coordinator and Senior Pastor.
  • Proficient in Google Platform.
SALARY:
This position is a salaried position. The salary is $625 a month with the possibility of an increase in salary based on experience and performance in the position in the future.
