Full Job Description Position Overview:

The Tigard UMC (TUMC) Accompanist supports the worship life of TUMC by offering skilled, excellent, sensitive, and appropriate musical accompaniment during worship services and for the TUMC Sanctuary Choir. TUMC is a United Methodist Church located in Tigard, Oregon. We are a progressive, fully inclusive and welcoming congregation.

Specific Responsibilities:

Accompany the Sunday morning worship service on the piano and/or organ, including all congregational songs, the choir anthem, special music, and other worship service music. Accompany the choir at the weekly choir rehearsal during the choir season (September through May). Rehearse with and accompany soloists and ensembles providing special music (i.e. solos, instrumental music, violin solo, etc.) Make musical preparations for worship services at the direction of the Pastor and worship leaders.

Qualifications:

Degree in music preferred. Demonstrated proficiency and excellence in accompanying congregational singing and accompanying soloists and choirs from the piano (required) and the organ (strongly preferred). Ability to take direction from the worship leaders and planners as well as a willingness to work collaboratively with the pastor, choir director, and TUMC volunteers and staff. Flexibility, patience, and a "can-do" attitude. Ability to play a variety of musical styles and genres (classical, gospel, etc.). Knowledge of Christian liturgical seasons preferred. Familiarity with the United Methodist Church a plus. Must pass a background check and all other screening procedures in accordance with TUMC's Safe Sanctuary Policy. Terms of Employment:

This position requires approximately 6-7 hours per week. The schedule includes Sunday morning worship (2 hours) and Wednesday evening choir rehearsal (1.5-2 hours), plus any preparation time required. The salary is $900 - $1100 per month based on experience. Additional compensation is provided for special worship services outside the regular schedule, including but not limited to those during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Additional compensation is provided for funerals, memorial services, and weddings. There will be six (6) Sundays (and Wednesdays, if applicable) off per year. Time off must be coordinated with and approved by the Pastor at least two (2) weeks in advance. Use of the church piano or organ for personal rehearsal and/or private lessons will be permitted. This position is at-will and either party can terminate the relationship at any time with or without cause and with or without notice.

Other Provisions:

This position is supervised by the Senior Pastor. The staff member will have a contact person on the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), referred to as a liaison, for periodic check-ins and informal communication.
