Job Description

Job Summary The Newberry Opera House is seeking Stagehand Associates to support the technical execution of performances and events by assisting with the setup, operation, and breakdown of stage production elements, including lighting, audio, scenery, and props. Working behind the scenes, Stagehand Associates follow direction from technical leadership to execute show cues, maintain a safe and organized work environment, and ensure all equipment and backstage areas are properly prepared. This role requires adaptability, teamwork, attention to detail, and a commitment to supporting high-quality productions while contributing to a positive and professional atmosphere for performers, staff, and guests. Responsibilities Assist with loading, unloading, and setup of stage equipment, including props, scenery, lighting, and audio equipment. Support stage changeovers during performances and rehearsals. Operate basic stage equipment as directed by technical staff. Follow all safety procedures and guidelines when handling equipment and working on stage. Maintain cleanliness and organization of backstage areas, storage spaces, and work zones. Respond promptly to instructions from supervisors, stage managers, and technical leads. Assist with rigging, lighting, or sound tasks when trained and assigned. Ensure all equipment is properly stored and secured after use. Monitor backstage activity to ensure a safe and efficient working environment. Contribute to a positive and team-oriented work environment. Be proactive by anticipating technical and logistical needs during events. Stay up to date on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
Essential Responsibilities:
These examples do not include all possible tasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks. Assist with pre-show, show, and post-show technical operations. Execute stage setups according to production requirements and diagrams. Support scene changes quickly and safely during live performances. Handle stage equipment carefully to prevent damage or injury. Communicate effectively with backstage crew and leadership during productions. Assist performers and production staff with technical needs as directed. Maintain awareness of cues and timing during live events. Follow all venue policies regarding safety, equipment uses, and backstage conduct. Identify and report any technical or safety issues immediately to supervisors. Support strike (teardown) activities efficiently following events. Requirements Must be at least 17 years old. To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate should also have: Basic knowledge of stage operations, lighting, audio, or rigging (preferred but not required). Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to follow directions precisely and work under supervision. Professional demeanor and reliability. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and irregular hours based on event schedules. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions (including heat, humidity, and direct sunlight) Ability to remain calm and focused in fast-paced, high-pressure environments. Strong attention to detail and safety awareness. Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. Prior experience in live events, theater, or production (preferred but not required). Ability to pass a background check Valid driver's license preferred Commitment to supporting high-quality productions and the mission of the Newberry Opera House. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods, walk, talk, and hear. The employee may be required to reach with hands and arms and or climb stairs. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted. The employee must be comfortable working in backstage and low-light environments. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Pay:
$11.00 - $13.00 per hour
