Job Title:
Phlebotomist Job Description The Phlebotomist supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality specimen collection and processing, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and recommending improvements to workflow. This role focuses on accurate blood draws and other specimen collections, proper labeling and handling, and clear communication with patients and clinical staff to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable laboratory operations. Responsibilities Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner. Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols. Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand what to expect and feel at ease. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, verifying all information for accuracy before and after collection. Label specimens accurately, including applying computer-generated or manual labels, and ensure all identifiers match test orders and scripts. Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity. Record maintenance data and perform routine decontamination of work areas and equipment in line with laboratory standards. Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy prior to processing or transport. Package specimens for transport following protocol, including using appropriate containers, temperature controls, and documentation. Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes to preserve quality. Follow specific procedures and protocols for different types of specimens to maintain integrity from collection through transport. Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and specimen handling requirements are followed. Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information as permitted to satisfy inquiries. Update and verify patient information in systems or on documentation to ensure accurate records. Troubleshoot routine phlebotomy and specimen processing issues and make recommendations to improve workflow and efficiency. Assist with training and mentoring team members on proper phlebotomy techniques, safety practices, and laboratory procedures. Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, as well as internal safety and infection control policies. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures using both straight needles and butterfly needles. Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood collection, specimen handling, and patient interaction. Ability to accurately label specimens and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Experience centrifuging specimens and performing basic specimen processing tasks such as splitting and freezing samples. Ability to collect and handle various specimen types, including urine and fecal specimens, according to established procedures. Proficiency in updating and verifying patient information and maintaining accurate records. Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety, infection control, and specimen handling. Customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks. Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. High School Diploma orGED. 0-2
years of overall experience in a related medical, laboratory, or clinical setting. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment with high specimen volumes. Familiarity with laboratory operations, including specimen processing and basic laboratory workflows. Comfort reading and relaying laboratory results over the phone in accordance with policy. Attention to detail and a commitment to 100% accuracy in labeling, requisition matching, and documentation. Ability to troubleshoot routine issues in phlebotomy and specimen processing and suggest workflow improvements. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, orders, and tasks efficiently. Ability to work collaboratively with clinical and laboratory teams while maintaining a professional and supportive demeanor. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced clinical laboratory or hospital setting where you will perform frequent blood draws and specimen collections throughout the day. You will regularly use phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, collection tubes, and centrifuges, and work with computers and Microsoft Office applications to update patient information and manage documentation. The environment follows strict OSHA and DEP safety and infection control standards, including routine decontamination of work areas and adherence to established protocols for specimen handling, storage, and transport. You can expect a structured, process-driven workplace that values accuracy, patient care, and teamwork, with frequent interaction with patients, clinicians, and other laboratory staff. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Lansdale, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
