Job Title:
Pipe Layer - Civil Construction Job Description This role focuses on the installation of storm, water, and sewage piping systems on civil construction projects throughout the Richmond, VA area. The pipe layer works as part of a field crew to perform excavation, pipe installation, and pipe fitting while using construction tools and heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Responsibilities Install storm, water, and sewage pipe according to project plans, specifications, and grade requirements. Assist with excavation activities to prepare trenches and work areas for pipe installation. Set up and accurately use laser equipment to establish line and grade for pipe installation. Perform pipe laying and pipe fitting tasks, including positioning, aligning, and joining pipe sections. Support civil construction activities such as backfilling, compaction, and site cleanup after pipe installation. Work alongside heavy equipment operators and skilled laborers to complete daily project tasks safely and efficiently. Inspect installed piping to ensure proper alignment, slope, and connections before backfilling. Follow all safety procedures on construction sites, including proper use of tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment. Maintain a clean and organized work area and care for tools and equipment used on the job. Travel to various project sites throughout the Richmond, VA area as assigned. Essential Skills 1-2+ years of experience as a pipe layer, specifically installing storm, water, or sewage pipe. 1-2+ years of experience in civil construction environments. Ability to set up and accurately operate laser equipment for line and grade control. Hands-on experience with pipe laying and pipe fitting in the field. Familiarity with excavation practices and working in and around trenches. Ability to work effectively as part of a construction crew on active job sites. Strong awareness of construction site safety practices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with heavy equipment on or around civil construction projects. Knowledge in general construction or skilled labor roles. Ability to adapt to different project locations and site conditions within the Richmond, VA area. Work Environment This is a field-based role on active civil construction sites throughout the Richmond, VA area, including locations such as Chesterfield, the East End, the City of Richmond, and Chester. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with an expected workweek of approximately 50-60 hours, so you should be comfortable with extended hours and outdoor work. The work involves excavation, pipe installation, and collaboration with crews using heavy equipment and construction tools in varying weather and ground conditions. Standard construction site attire and appropriate personal protective equipment are required Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chester, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
