Planer Operator - Lumber Yard Job Description Job Title Planer Operator Job Summary The Planer Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining planer mill equipment used to size, smooth, and finish lumber products according to company and customer specifications. This position ensures lumber quality, monitors machine performance, and maintains safe and efficient production within the lumber yard or sawmill operation. Key Responsibilities Operate planer machines and related equipment safely and efficiently Adjust machine settings to meet lumber size and grade specifications Inspect lumber for defects, quality, and proper dimensions Monitor production flow and maintain consistent output Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on planer equipment Replace planer knives and assist with machine setup as needed Remove jams and troubleshoot equipment issues during operation Maintain clean and organized work areas around machinery Follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout policies, and company guidelines Communicate with supervisors and team members regarding production needs and equipment performance Qualifications Previous sawmill, planer mill, or lumber yard experience preferred Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate industrial machinery Ability to read measuring devices and production specifications Strong attention to detail and safety awareness Ability to work in a fast-paced industrial environment Dependable attendance and teamwork skills Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds Frequent bending, climbing, reaching, and repetitive motions Ability to work in hot, cold, dusty, and noisy environments Work Environment Industrial lumber yard or sawmill setting Exposure to moving machinery, wood dust, and varying weather conditions Full-time position with possible overtime and shift work
