The Town of Avon, Colorado, is accepting applications for a Police Officer with the Town of Avon's Police Department. This position is responsible for protecting the lives, safety, health, welfare, and property of individuals within the corporate limits of the Town of Avon by enforcing municipal, state, and federal ordinances, statutes, and laws. Provide independent judgment and good decision-making ability based on rules, regulations, and policies of the Avon Police Department. Physically protect oneself, the public or fellow officers in threatening and stressful situations to include deadly force if required. Arrest persons wanted on warrants, by outside agencies, upon probable cause or other legal requirements, overcome resistance by the arrestee when required, and follow all state, federal, and municipal laws and court mandates as required. Investigating traffic accidents and crimes committed in the Police Department's jurisdiction to include collection of evidence, photographing the scene and evidence, diagramming the scenes, care of the victims, apprehension of offenders and interviews of witnesses. Investigations include all types of terrain such as mountains, valleys, and populated areas. Patrol assigned areas of the town to prevent crime, deter and/or detect illegal activities, and serve and protect the citizens. Identifying violations of both criminal law and traffic laws and prepare and issue summons to violators. Respond to radio dispatched calls for service, both emergency and routine types of calls. These include life threatening calls, crimes in progress, traffic accidents, domestic disturbances, burglary and robbery alarms, and other miscellaneous calls. Prepare a variety of detailed reports and records necessary for all situations requiring detailed reports to include criminal violations, non-criminal incidents, traffic accidents, and accidental injuries on public property, industrial accidents, and other matters as assigned. Identify violations of both criminal law and traffic laws and prepare and issue summons to violators. Prepare criminal filings for felony criminal violations and present them to the court for prosecution. Testify in court to situations observed and actions taken on all prosecutions of violations of the law to include criminal, municipal, traffic, and civil. Perform traffic direction within the town when congestion or traffic back up creates problems, or other situations warrant such action. Carry and use a semi-automatic pistol, a 12-gauge shotgun, or a high-powered rifle, a less lethal shotgun and qualify annually through the department firearms course. Carry and communicate effectively on a handheld Police Department Radio. Participate in annual department training regarding officer safety; handcuffing techniques, gun retention and gun take away. Participate in all department required training, both written and physical to include classroom, physical agility, and firearms. Provide backup assistance to outside agencies when requested regardless of jurisdiction. Drive a patrol vehicle in a safe and effective manner during normal and emergency responses. Display professional appearance and conduct to promote good public relations with all residents, businesses and visitors to the town. Work all shifts required by the Avon Police Department to include day shifts, evening shifts, and night shifts and other special shifts or assignments as requiredOther Duties and Functions:
Provide inspections for businesses to assist in strengthening the physical security. Provide escorts to businesses for money deposits. Develop intelligence information when possible on potential crime, drug violations, and traffic problems within the town. Assist schools, community children's programs, and other citizen groups with public relations programs and safety programs. Attend department staff and in-service training meetings. Conduct training classes for fellow officers, the public and outside agencies when required or assigned. Enforce parking regulations throughout the town. Provide vehicle inspections for the public verifying identification numbers. Provide extensive and selective traffic enforcement to identified accident problem areas in town and identify traffic violations. Assist the public with roadside assistance, information, directions, business checks, vacation checks, and other requests within the legal scope of the officer's duties. Responsible for other duties as assigned.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, completion of a P.O.S.T. certified Police Training Academy and P.O.S.T. certified or certifiable to include firearms training, driver training, and arrest and control techniques, and a minimum of one-year experience as a Police Officer is preferred.Minimum Requirements:
Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment, a United States Citizen or permanent resident, possess a valid Colorado driver's license, and pass entry-level exams to include psychological exam, polygraph exam, doctor's physical, written exam, oral board exam, physical ability exam, and extensive background investigations. Must be in good physical condition with weight proportionate to height. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and may be subject to random, unannounced drug and alcohol testing as outline in the Town's Drug & Alcohol Policy. Special Requirements Certified and non-certified candidates are encouraged to apply. Non-certified candidates will be sponsored through a police academy upon hire. The Town reserves the right to suspend or extend the posting deadline based on the receipt of qualified candidates.
