Job Description

The Pre-Op/PACU Registered Nurse delivers high-quality, patient-centered care throughout the perioperative experience. This role is responsible for preparing patients for surgery, monitoring and caring for patients during the immediate postoperative phase, and ensuring safe discharge home.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Preoperative Responsibilities:
Perform comprehensive nursing assessments (vital signs, medical history, medication reconciliation, allergy review). Verify surgical consents, pre-surgical testing, and documentation for accuracy and completeness. Educate patients and families regarding the surgical process, anesthesia plan, NPO guidelines, and post-op expectations. Initiate IV therapy and administer preoperative medications as ordered. Collaborate with anesthesia providers and surgical teams to ensure efficient patient flow.
PACU Responsibilities:
Receive patients from the operating room and provide close monitoring during anesthesia recovery. Assess and manage airway, vital signs, pain, nausea, surgical site integrity, and level of consciousness. Administer medications and treatments per post-operative orders and established protocols. Provide thorough discharge instructions and education to patients and caregivers. Evaluate readiness for discharge using established criteria and escalate care as needed. Education & Experience Associate's Degree in Nursing (A.A.) or equivalent required. Minimum one (1) year of nursing experience required. Postoperative or critical care experience preferred. Licensure & Certifications Active North Carolina RN license (or Compact State license). BLS (required) ACLS (required) PALS (required) Core Competencies Successful candidates will demonstrate: Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking. Effective, compassionate communication with patients and families. Ability to prioritize and manage patient flow in a high-volume ASC. Flexibility and adaptability in a changing schedule environment. Proficiency in IV placement, medication administration, airway support, and PACU monitoring protocols. Commitment to infection prevention and patient safety standards.
