PRE-OP/PACU RN

a) Assesses patient status on admission to the preop area, the operating room and/or the post-op area, and on a continuing basis. b) Provides safe, therapeutic quality care to patients by utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis in a timely manner and by setting appropriate priorities. Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge. Documents interventions and patient's responses. c) Ensures provision of patient care in an organized and timely manner. d) Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care. e) Communicates appropriate information regarding patient conditions to those who require the information including, surgeons, anesthesia, management and other staff. f) Safely carries out physician's orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities. g) Initiates and participates in patient and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient's level of understanding and readiness to learn. h) Displays an understanding of each patient's cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturity in assessments, treatment, and care. i) Takes part in pre and post-op phone calls and communicates any problems to the appropriate person. j) Maintains competencies to function in RN role within specific area. (Ex. Pre-Op and Recovery)

PACU RN DUTIES

a) Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedure performed and types and uses of various anesthetic agents by making appropriate nursing assessments and properly positioning patients who are recovering from anesthesia. b) Assesses patients recovering from anesthesia and makes appropriate judgments for nursing intervention. c) Evaluates respiratory status to determine the need for additional intervention; inserts oral or nasal airway as needed. d) Monitors patient continuously while patient recovers from anesthesia. e) Observes surgical dressings and drainage devices for signs of abnormal bleeding. f) Monitors blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, respiration, and EKG. g) Recognizes life-threatening arrhythmias and initiates appropriate therapy and/or assures assistance. h) Demonstrates knowledge and skill in working with monitors. i) Performs venipuncture for IV restarts; mixes IV medications; administers IV medication. j) Transfers patient to Phase II when discharge criteria from Phase I is met. k) Offers patient nourishment as desired. Invites family members to join patient and initiates post‑op teaching. l) Prepares patient for discharge with post operative instruction and teaching.
