Job Description

Position Summary The Clark Art Institute seeks a skilled Preparator to assist in preparing and optimizing art storage and preparation spaces in anticipation of new objects from the Aso O. Tavitian Foundation. This role will support the integration of 331 artworks gifted to the Clark and contribute to planning for the new Aso O. Tavitian Wing, set to open in 2027-2028. This is a one-year, term-limited project position with the possibility of an extension. Major Duties and Responsibilities Assist in receiving, unpacking, and safely storing new artworks; coordinate art photography, assess needs for backing boards and other improvements. Support the Chief Preparator in displaying and storing both collection and non-collection objects, collaborating with Registrars, Curators, and Conservators to ensure best practices. Conduct daily inspection and maintenance of all exhibition and storage areas, including lighting and display components. Monitor, secure, and maintain the aesthetics of all exhibition and storage spaces. Coordinate with Registrars and other team members to manage and track project progress and ensure timelines are met. Handle artworks for conservation, photography, loans, and display adjustments; maintain accurate records of art movements and locations. Train and oversee contract preparators on installation and art handling protocols, ensuring Clark standards are upheld. Identify materials and supplies needed for the project. Act as Courier as assigned, coordinating with Registrars and Conservators to safely transport loaned artworks. Pack and unpack artworks, install hardware for displays, and frame/mat works on paper. Assist with deliveries, often outside regular hours, and maintain clean, organized workspaces. Perform other duties as needed to support project goals. Qualifications Bachelor's degree preferred, with at least 3 years of experience in museum or gallery installation and art handling, or equivalent. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently or collaboratively as needed. Advanced knowledge of installation, packing, and storage techniques. Effective communication, teamwork, and flexibility. Commitment to safety, security, and cleanliness in all spaces. Participation in the TSA's Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program, including successful completion of a security assessment through the Department of Homeland Security. Reaching Work Environment:
Work will be performed in an office environment and museum spaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Some travel required.
