Job Description
Property/Evidence Specialist Schedule:
40 hours per week | Shifts Vary Are you highly organized, detail-driven, and able to handle sensitive evidence with professionalism, accuracy, and integrity? If you thrive in structured environments where chain of custody, accountability, and public safety matter every day-this role was built for you. What You'll Do Support the integrity of the Fort Wayne Police Department's evidence and property operations by managing, documenting, securing, and tracking evidentiary and recovered property. This role plays a critical part in criminal investigations, court proceedings, and maintaining public trust. Key Responsibilities Receive, log, barcode, store, and maintain chain of custody for evidence and property using computerized systems Determine proper storage, handling, and disposition of evidence including firearms, narcotics, DNA, IBIS, CODIS, money, and high-value items Coordinate releases, court orders, auctions, destruction processes, and property returns in compliance with policies and laws Prepare evidence requests for court proceedings and assist law enforcement agencies including ISP, DEA, ATF, Secret Service, and Prosecutor's Office Maintain organized inventory systems, detailed records, and secure storage areas while assisting the public and internal departments professionally What You Bring | Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent Minimum of 2 years of law enforcement training and/or experience Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information professionally Strong written and verbal communication skills Preferred Certifications IDACS Certification NCIC Certification Valid Indiana Driver's License Technical Skills & Knowledge Knowledge of evidence/property room procedures and chain of custody practices Understanding of DNA, ballistic evidence, IBIS, and CODIS procedures Experience with computerized records systems and evidence tracking databases Ability to type a minimum of 30 WPM accurately Ability to prepare clear, concise reports and documentation Why Work for the City of Fort Wayne This is more than property management, work that directly supports Police investigations, court cases, and community safety.
