General Summary The Public Safety Officer (Unarmed) will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Public Safety Officer. This is an unarmed position and will not carry or deploy any weapons. The Public Safety Officer (Unarmed) will perform routine surveillance of Phelps Health properties, grounds, and buildings, and will endeavor to provide a secure and protected environment for staff, patients and visitors. The Public Safety Officer (Unarmed) will perform foot and vehicle patrols of the premises, and will respond to individual calls for service throughout the facility and grounds. The Public Safety Officer (Unarmed) will keep accurate records and documentation of routine activities and will respond to all situations where there is an elevated possibility of a disturbance or violence and will endeavor to de-escalate and control such situations in a professional manner so that potential threats are controlled. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Shows concern and respect for others by dealing with people in a compassionate, sensitive and responsive manner. Respects the confidentiality of patient information. Demonstrates working knowledge of HIPPA Regulations as they relate to performance of duties. Provides updates and follow-up to departments and staff who request services from Public Safety. Completes shift activities in the allotted time frame. Including but not limited to Daily Shift Logs and Incident Reports. Keeps timely and accurate records and documentation of routine activities, rounds and incidents which occur in the course of the shift. Provides written reports to designated managers and departments as required or directed. Communicates with Senior Public Safety Officer and his/her designee, information regarding safety and security issues, emergencies or situations that are potentially dangerous or life threatening or that could compromise the welfare of the hospital, patients, visitors and staff. Communicates and coordinates activities related to emergencies, incidents or crisis situations in a calm and professional manner. Monitors, assists and directs parking on hospital premises per policy and as directed. Communicates well both verbally and in writing, shares important information with co-workers in a timely manner, listens attentively to others, asks clarifying questions, manages distractions and interruptions. Education High School Diploma / GED required. Work Experience No experience necessary. Certification/License Valid Driver's License BLS through the American Heart Association within 90 days of hire Mandt training within 90 days of hire. IAHSS Basic certification within 12 months of hire. Mental/Physical Requirements Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, read, and interpret policies and procedures related to safety and security. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and walk / run long distances (i.e.) stairs, long corridors or parking lots. Must be able to operate patrol vehicles in a safe manner. Working Conditions May experience long periods of standing and walking. Will come in contact with patients, family members, hospital visitors and employees. May encounter unpleasant conditions and exposure to heat, cold, noise, dirt, inclement weather, chemicals, gases, water, fumes, overhead pipes, infectious disease and waste. Will encounter aggressive, angry and abusive people.
