Job Description

Overview The City of Burlington is a great community with a truly small-town feel, but with the benefit of being located near larger amenities. As the Director of Public Works position is largely self-directed, we need the right candidate that is self-motivated to make the right decisions on what's best for shaping the future of our city's infrastructure. Your strategic vision and leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the sustainable growth and development for our community. Duties Performs a wide variety of routine maintenance on City water and sewer systems. Presides over all streets, bridges, and sidewalks of the city, with responsibility to see that all preventative maintenance is performed, and needful repairs are made. Performs a wide variety of building and grounds maintenance, trims and maintains trees, mows, rakes, and irrigates city properties, as well as snow removal on streets & grounds during winter months. Works closely with City Engineer to determine improvement projects on City's utility systems, streets, and other infrastructure. Serves as representative for the city on various committees, such as Central Dakota Metropolitan Planning Organization (CDMPO) Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). Provides City Auditor, City Council and Mayor with quality, accurate, and timely information and/or recommendations for action at public meetings. Supervises and maintains a positive working environment for all other Public Works employees, including Public Works Assistant and part-time summer employees. Minimum Qualifications The minimum knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position are listed below. The City reserves the right to allow substitutions if a candidate exceeds requirements in one area but may be deficient in another. Ability to learn and understand the hazards and safety precautions common to excavations; Ability to learn, understand, and apply applicable work methods and materials; Ability to perform moderately heavy, manual tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather; Ability to physically accomplish all aspects of the position; Ability to operate motor driven and hydraulic equipment; Ability to follow simple verbal and written instructions; Ability to exercise independent judgement as appropriate; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees, administrative supervisor, and the public; Must be able to work extended periods of time without supervision; Must possess or have the ability to obtain required certifications, such as Water Operation Certification and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license; Must possess a minimum Class B driver license; Join us in shaping the future of our community's infrastructure! $55,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
