Job Description

Job Summary We are seeking a skilled and motivated Public Works Mechanic to join our dedicated team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of heavy equipment, vehicles, and industrial machinery used in public works operations. Your expertise will ensure that all equipment operates safely and efficiently, supporting the community's infrastructure needs. Responsibilities Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on heavy equipment such as excavators, cranes, bulldozers, and loaders. Conduct repairs on fleet vehicles including trucks, tractor-trailers, and farm machinery, ensuring compliance with safety standards. Utilize schematics and technical manuals to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues across diverse equipment types. Operate power tools, hand tools, and heavy machinery safely to complete repairs efficiently. Fabricate parts or components as needed using welding, cutting, and metalworking techniques. Maintain detailed service records of all repairs, inspections, and maintenance activities for accountability and future reference. Assist with equipment assembly, installation, and testing to ensure operational readiness for public works projects. Skills Extensive experience with heavy equipment operation including excavators, forklifts, cranes, and other industrial machinery. Strong mechanical knowledge covering transmissions, hydraulics, suspension systems, air brakes, HVAC systems, diesel engines, shocks & struts, and tire service. Proficiency in automotive diagnostics and repair techniques for both light and heavy-duty vehicles. Ability to read schematics accurately and interpret technical manuals for troubleshooting complex systems. Skilled in welding, soldering, fabrication, and metalworking to repair or create parts as needed. Experience with electrical systems repair including wiring harnesses and control modules. Excellent customer service skills to communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders while maintaining a positive attitude during repairs or inspections. Pay:
$18.00 - $19.00 per hour
