Job Title:
QC Lab Technician (3rd Shift) Job Description The QC Lab Technician supports a major manufacturing and laboratory operation by performing complex quality control testing on production batches during 3rd shift (10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday night start). This role ensures that products meet physical and chemical specifications, maintains accurate records, and collaborates closely with production, quality, and development teams to resolve issues and drive continuous improvement. Responsibilities + Follow all established safety rules and procedures and perform each duty safely, satisfactorily, and in a timely manner. + Demonstrate integrity at all times and perform duties in alignment with the company's Code of Conduct. + Perform a wide variety of complex testing processes on production batches to measure physical and chemical characteristics, including viscosity, weight per unit of measure, flow, gloss, color characteristics (compared with standards), and other related tests. + Conduct wet chemistry tests and use laboratory techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), pH measurements, titrations, and viscosity testing to evaluate product quality. + Maintain, calibrate, and verify the proper functioning of laboratory test equipment. + Maintain accurate records and charts for all products tested, ensuring data is complete, organized, and readily traceable. + Record and report observations and test results in the appropriate QC cards or files, ensuring all entries are legible and complete. + Work closely with quality control, production, and development staff to evaluate production or field-related problems and support timely resolution. + Help identify potential causes of customer or field complaints by analyzing test data and contributing technical insight. + Actively participate in 5S activities to support a clean, organized, and efficient laboratory and production environment. + Sustain and improve organization in work areas by maintaining orderly storage, labeling, and workflow practices. + Perform housekeeping responsibilities in the laboratory and related work areas to ensure a safe and tidy environment. + For Level 2 responsibilities, evaluate test methods for repeatability and recommend improvements where appropriate. + Assist in developing and executing calibration plans for laboratory instruments and equipment. + Assist in developing training curriculum for laboratory procedures and quality control methods. + Assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) to standardize testing, documentation, and quality practices. + Participate in and support root cause investigations to identify and address underlying issues affecting product quality. Essential Skills + Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a science-related field, or an associate's degree, or at least 1 year of laboratory experience. + 1-3 years of relevant laboratory experience in quality control, chemistry, or related disciplines. + Hands-on experience performing laboratory tests such as wet chemistry, gas chromatography (GC), pH measurements, titrations, and viscosity testing. + Experience working in a quality control or laboratory environment, preferably with exposure to paints, coatings, or similar products. + Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. + Intermediate to advanced Excel skills, including data entry, analysis, and charting. + Ability to maintain and calibrate laboratory test equipment accurately and consistently. + Strong attention to detail and ability to record data clearly, completely, and legibly. + Ability to work effectively on 3rd shift (10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday night start) and manage responsibilities with minimal supervision. + Strong communication skills to collaborate with quality, production, and development teams. + Commitment to following safety procedures and maintaining a safe working environment. + Demonstrated integrity and adherence to ethical standards and codes of conduct. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working with paints or coatings in a laboratory environment. + Familiarity with quality control processes specific to manufacturing operations. + Experience contributing to 5S or other continuous improvement initiatives. + Exposure to developing or following standard operating procedures (SOPs). + Experience assisting with calibration plans and method validation for laboratory instruments. + Background in supporting root cause investigations and corrective actions. + Interest in long-term career growth within a large, global organization. + Ability to support training efforts by sharing knowledge and best practices with peers. Work Environment This role is based at a large manufacturing site with an integrated quality control laboratory that operates on a 3rd shift schedule (10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday night start). The environment combines production floor exposure with laboratory work, involving regular use of wet chemistry techniques, gas chromatography (GC), pH meters, titration equipment, and viscosity measurement instruments. The facility emphasizes safety, organization, and continuous improvement, with active participation in 5S initiatives and strong housekeeping standards. Team members typically wear appropriate laboratory and manufacturing attire, including personal protective equipment suited to working with paints, coatings, and chemical materials. The site is a major manufacturing hub that is growing and planned for continued expansion over the next several years, offering a stable environment, strong employee tenure, and multiple opportunities for advancement, including potential roles in research and development laboratories. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Pontiac, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
