Job Description

Railcar Switchman General Description:
A Rail Switch Team Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently directing the movement of railcars within a rail yard by manually operating track switches, coupling and uncoupling railcars, and coordinating with train/Trackmobile crews to ensure smooth equipment operations, all while adhering to strict safety regulations and procedures. Work Schedule will include working an 8hour day shift schedule. M-F, 6am to 2:30pm, Saturday and Sunday will be a rotation.
Key Responsibilities:
    Switch Operation:
    • Manually throw track switches to direct railcars onto the desired tracks.
    • Inspect switches for proper alignment and functionality.
    • Utilize hand signals and radio communication to coordinate switch movements with train crews.
    Coupling and Uncoupling Railcars:
    • Connect and disconnect railcars by aligning couplers and managing air hoses.
    • Apply and release hand brakes on railcars as needed.
    Train or Trackmobile Movement Coordination:
    • Monitor track conditions and train movements to ensure safe switching operations.
    • Communicate with either groundman or train/trackmobile operators during movement
    • Provide protection for trains/Trackmobile by properly aligning switches and setting signals.
    • Climbing up and down on the railcars
    Safety Compliance:
    • Adhere to all railroad safety regulations and operating procedures.
    • Conduct pre-shift inspections of equipment and track conditions.
    • Report any safety hazards or equipment malfunctions immediately.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
    • Physical strength to operate switches and couple railcars.
    • Excellent hand-eye coordination and visual acuity.
    Job Requirements:
    • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
    • Previous Experience in industrial environments is preferred.
    • Ability to climb ladders and stairs multiple times per shift.
    • Ability to reach, bend, stoop, push and/or pull, and frequently move up to 50 pounds.
    • Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, including hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, respirators, protective clothing, gloves, and Safety Harness.
    • Competent with the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
    • Excellent time management, attention to detail, and communication skills (verbal and written).
    • Must be willing to accept accountability and work well within a team.
    • Must be able to work effectively under pressure and perform duties under stressful situations.
    • Ability to understand and convey verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English.
    • Basic math and mechanical skills.
    • Experience with DOT, OSHA, and all related safety regulations preferred.
    • Must maintain a clean and safe work area.
    Pay:
    $19.00 - $22.00 per hour
