Job Description

Job Summary:
Under direction, this part-time position supports the City's recreation programming, community events, trails initiatives, and related quality-of-life activities. This position assists with event coordination, recreational programming, volunteer coordination, trail maintenance activities, and seasonal operational support. The Recreation & Events Assistant supports the City's broader tourism, recreation, and community development goals while helping activate and maintain community recreational assets and programming.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position does not exercise direct supervision but may assist in coordinating volunteers, event participants, and community work groups during events and recreation activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are essential functions of the position: Assist with planning, organizing, and implementing community recreation programming and activities. Support City events including festivals, concerts, markets, recreation activities, and seasonal community events. Assist with event setup, teardown, logistics, vendor coordination, and operational support. Coordinate volunteers and assist with participant engagement activities. Assist with promoting recreation programs and events through flyers, social media, and community outreach efforts. Support trail maintenance activities including cleanup, inspections, signage, and minor improvements inside and outside the City limits. Assist with volunteer trail workdays and outdoor recreation initiatives. Coordinate with recreation groups, nonprofits, and community organizations on recreation and event activities. Support seasonal recreation activities including assistance with ice rink operations and winter programming. Maintain recreation and event supplies, materials, and equipment. Provide general operational support for community and tourism-related initiatives. The following duties are non-essential (marginal) functions of the position: Assist other City departments with special projects and community initiatives as assigned. Participate in emergency support activities as needed. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small team environment. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions. Ability to communicate professionally with residents, visitors, volunteers, and partner organizations. Basic knowledge of recreation programming, event coordination, or trail maintenance preferred. Ability to safely operate hand tools and basic maintenance equipment preferred.
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Experience in recreation, events, trails, parks, tourism, customer service, or related field preferred. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
Certifications and Licensing Requirements:
Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record. CPR/First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain within six (6) months.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
Physical Demands:
This position performs physically active work associated with recreation programming, events, trails activities, and community operations support.
  • Strength & lifting: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull event supplies, signs, tables, recreation equipment, and materials; frequently up to 40 lbs and occasionally heavier with assistance.
  • Mobility & posture: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and reaching during event setup, cleanup, and trail activities.
Climbing/Access:
Ability to navigate uneven terrain, trails, parks, and outdoor recreation areas safely.
  • Manual dexterity: Frequent use of hands for event setup, trail work, basic maintenance tasks, and operation of hand tools.
  • Endurance & coordination: Ability to work safely outdoors and maintain balance and coordination on uneven terrain and during physically active work.
Vision/hearing/communication:
Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, residents, and event participants.
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors at City facilities, parks, trails, streets, and event locations.
  • Weather exposure: Regular exposure to heat, cold, precipitation, wind, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Noise exposure: Frequent exposure to moderate noise levels associated with events, equipment, and outdoor recreation activities.
  • Work hazards: Occasional exposure to uneven terrain, moving equipment, crowds, and outdoor work environments requiring adherence to safety practices.
Sensory, Communication, and Cognitive Requirements:
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly enough to coordinate activities and maintain safe operations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain simple records related to recreation programming and events.
  • Ability to interact professionally and positively with the public.
Scheduling/Operational Conditions:
  • This position requires evening, weekend, and holiday work associated with events, recreation programming, and seasonal activities.
  • Hours may vary seasonally based on operational and event needs.
May require work outside normal business hours during emergencies, weather events, or critical system needs consistent with public works operations. Hiring Range:
$18 - $24/hour
