Recreation Manager Park Overview Wildlife Prairie Park has often been referred to as a jewel in the Midwest. Located just outside of Peoria, Illinois, this 1,800-acre zoological park is home to over 180 animals representing more than 60 species native to Illinois. Our guests come to learn about wolves, bison, waterfowl, black bears, elk, cougar, otters, and much more. The park opened in 1978 and since its inception, Wildlife Prairie Park has strived to promote its mission of conservation, education, and recreation. Position Summary The Recreation Guide provides hands-on assistance for recreational activities and programs. This role supports the Recreation Manager in executing activities by assisting with preparation, delivery, cleanup, and the maintenance of recreational areas and trail systems. The position requires flexibility, a positive attitude, and a strong commitment to providing engaging and safe experiences for guests of all ages. A key focus of this role is delivering exceptional guest experiences while supporting recreation programs and activities that contribute to park visitation and revenue growth. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Support the implementation of recreational programming. Assist with setup, operation, and takedown of recreational areas and activity stations. Engage with guests to facilitate safe and enjoyable experiences. Provide exceptional guest experience and customer service by interacting with and assisting guests. Collaborate and communicate with Inform guests about available recreation programs, park activities, and upcoming events to enhance their visit. Help coordinate seasonal events such as Scary Park, Pioneer Day, Santa's Wildlife Express, and summer family programs. Perform light maintenance on trails and recreation areas, including clearing debris and maintaining walkways. Assist with maintaining the grounds of recreation areas by performing basic groundskeeping duties such as mowing, weed eating, mulching, brush removal, and general landscape upkeep. Assist with garbage removal and disposal from recreational areas, trails, and activity spaces to ensure clean and welcoming environments for guests. Operate hand tools such as weed eaters, blowers, rakes, and related equipment to maintain outdoor activity spaces. Assist with the inspection and basic upkeep of recreation equipment and report maintenance or safety concerns to the Recreation Manager. Monitor activity zones for safety, enforce park rules, and provide guidance to guests. Assist with maintaining safe recreation environments and follow emergency response procedures when needed. Keep recreation supplies and areas organized and clean. Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers during park-wide events. Provide feedback to the Recreation Manager to improve operations. Represent Wildlife Prairie Park in a professional and courteous manner. Attend department meetings, training sessions, operational briefings, and review park communications to remain informed of park activities and expectations. Support park initiatives focused on enhancing guest satisfaction and supporting recreation-related revenue opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned to support recreation and park programming. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of recreational programming and public engagement. Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively. Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Proficiency in the safe use of hand tools such as weed eaters, blowers, rakes, and related grounds maintenance equipment. Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Sound judgment and ability to remain calm in emergencies. Enthusiasm for outdoor activities, environmental education, and guest service. Minimum Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Valid driver's license required. Prior experience in recreation, customer service, education, landscaping, or grounds maintenance preferred. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. CPR/First Aid certification preferred. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Must possess mobility, strength, and stamina to perform physical work for extended periods; to operate a wide range of hand tools and recreational equipment; and to drive a vehicle as needed. Requires vision to read printed materials and computer screens, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person and over the phone or radio. Work occurs both indoors and outdoors and may involve walking on uneven or slippery surfaces, standing, sitting, running, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching, twisting, turning, and repetitive hand movements. Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier items with proper assistance and equipment.Pay:
