The Lansing Housing Commission (LHC) is a Public Housing Agency (PHA) that provides rental housing units and rental assistance to families. We strive toward a brighter future for our residents by providing them a quality standard of housing while making it affordable in their journey to become financially independent. We invest in people by providing more than just housing; we also connect people with opportunities and on-site resources such as GED programs as well as outreach programs that assist with health and quality of life issues. We also provide summer youth activities, which include educational experiences and athletic programs to keep them enjoying, participating and growing in the Lansing community.AMERICORPS VOLUNTEER IMPACT
The Resident Health Coordinator will build capacity for the LHC's garden and food access program. The resident will engage residents living at LHC properties to expand their utilization of on-site community gardens, manage residents who act as "garden leaders", and facilitate educational opportunities for residents around food access and nutrition. The Resident Health Coordinator will also coordinate LHC's monthly food pantry and food distribution events in two LHC properties to support residents' access to healthy foods. The Resident Health Coordinator will assess gaps in implementation and help formalize strategic community partnerships and processes to deliver healthy foods to LHC residents on a monthly basis.POSITION DETAILS
Responsibilities:
The Resident Health Coordinator's responsibilities include: Volunteer Management and Resident Engagement- Expand resident engagement in community garden utilization across LHC properties.
- Liaise with community garden leaders and resident volunteers across LHC properties; report resident volunteer concerns and issues to supervisor
- Engage resident volunteers who coordinate the garden programs to help them improve processes.
- Disseminate promotional materials regarding availability of plots through various methods
- Coordinate with community partners, such as MSU extension, to offer educational sessions to youth residents about gardening, nutrition, and healthy cooking. Develop educational materials as needed. Food Access
- Coordinate attendance and logistics of monthly food access community meeting at the LaRoy Froh complex
- Coordinate food distribution days on a monthly basis, assisting in the receipt of food pallets for 50 to 80 residents
- Coordinate monthly food pantry days at Capital City Apartments.
- Formalize and document food distribution and food pantry days in written materials to ensure efficiency and sustainability of the program.
- Develop protocols for communicating with the Greater Lansing Food Bank, establishing drop off locations and times, assuring quality of expiring/perishable goods, managing date-sensitive issues, maintaining food stock at the Capital City Apartments pantry, and managing storage location
- Establish, expand and maintain strategic partnerships with local food vendors and grocers to deliver excess food stock to LHC residents between food distribution and food pantry days, as available; seek sponsorships to expand fresh food donations to LHC residents.
- Assure quality of food safety with LHC management and supervisory staff
- Publicize schedule of food pantry and food distribution; field resident concerns and questions regarding food quality and access
- Establish relationships with Capital region food pantries to pick up excess foodstuffs to ensure reduction of food waste Minimum Knowledge and Skills

Service Conditions:
- In person service
- In-person location, 419 Cherry Street (LHC offices) with travel to various LHC properties as needed.
- LHC will issue a AmeriCorps Volunteer a laptop with necessary software to complete service activities
- AmeriCorps Volunteers are required to have reliable transportation
Service Schedule:
- AmeriCorps Volunteer schedule will be determined for Monday-Friday betwen 8 am to 7 pm. Weekend availability as needed with ample communication beforehand.
- AmeriCorps Volunteers are required to participate and attend monthly ICHD Public Health AmeriCorps professional development, quarterly ICHD AmeriCorps professional development, participate in events including national service days, and regional and local service projects
- Sick or personal days are allowed, but AmeriCorps Volunteers lose possible days to earn the required number of hours needed to successfully complete the term of service.
AMERICORPS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Participate in monthly
ICHD PHA
AmeriCorps Training and Professional Development in topics like grant-writing and resume development- Participate in National Days of Service (9/11 Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, Russ Mawby Regional Day of Service, Youth Volunteer Day)
- Attend AmeriCorps orientation at the Ingham County Health Department
- All AmeriCorps Volunteers will participate in an end of service performance evaluation
- All AmeriCorps Volunteers will be required to submit bi-weekly time sheets, quarterly data reports, and all other data tasks requested by the Host Site Public Health AmeriCorps AmeriCorps Volunteers should possess:
- a desire and ability to work with a diverse group of people;
- a willingness to learn and serve others;
- an ability to work independently and in a team environment successfully, and
- strong organizational, writing, and oral communication skills, and a high attention to detail AmeriCorps Program Eligibility
- be 17 years or older at the start of service (no upper age limit)
- be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien
- Agree to and pass a national service criminal history check with eligibility verification in accordance with 45 CFR 2540.202. AmeriCorps Commitment and Benefits
- Loan forbearance and interest repayment available for eligible loans
- End of Service Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,817.14
- $25 per month allowance for mileage reimbursement during each month of service for service related travel
- Up to $200 available in professional development funds
