Non-Exempt, Full Time, 40 hours per week Job Summary The Upward Bound Summer Project employs two (2) college students as Residential Night Advisors to supervise, advise, and tutor approximately (70) seventy students from Belmont, Franklin, Lincoln, Sotomayor, and Wilson High Schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The Residential Night Advisors ensure student participate safety and Upward Bound regulation compliance through overnight hall monitoring and supervision in an assigned residence hall. The Residential Night Advisor will supervise approximately 70 high school students who are participating in a 6-week educational program at Occidental College during the summer. Residential Advisors report directly to the Assistant Director. Job Duties 40%
  • Administrative
  • Be informed and able to instruct students regarding emergency procedures; assist in and implement crisis management procedures and reports.
Work with all residential staff to ensure that safety and health regulations are vigorously monitored and observed in the residence hall as well as the campus at large. Assist with administrative tasks and preparation of materials as needed; ensure that assigned material/supplies are prepared for activities. Communicate with Assistant Director at the beginning and end of each shift. In the case of an incident and/or program policy violations, Residential Night Advisors immediately notify the Assistant Director, then complete an incident form.

  • Supervision
  • Provide daily residential supervision for student participants throughout the tenure of the program.
Complete weekly reports and other related program documents as required. Assist with the oversight and enforcement of the Program's policies and procedures, and discipline standards established by the Project Director, including enforcement of silent study and quite hours, and curfew schedules. Ensure the safety, well-being, and policy compliance of all high school student participants during the overnight hours. Responsibilities include nightly room check, floor monitoring, and emergency crisis response (when applicable).

  • Student Support/Advisement
  • Develop and implement program activities to promote a sense of community within and outside of the residence hall as a team member and as an individual responsible for a specific RA group.
Prepare and facilitate icebreaker and team activities to foster community among students. Affirm and support students' goals of continuing into higher education. Be on-call 24 hours per day, five days per week. Other duties as assigned.
  • (Essential) Minimum Qualifications Must be currently enrolled in an AA or bachelor's degree program.
Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of first-generation and/or low-income students. Understanding of cross-cultural values regarding education. Ability to establish rapport with the target population. Must have the interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain a trusting and productive working relationship with Program staff and students. Bilingual skills are highly desired. Proficient in Microsoft office Suite. Proficient in virtual and online programs such as Zoom, Google Drive, and Google Classroom. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with TRIO and Educational Equity Programs. One year of experience working with low-income, first-generation, underrepresented students either as a tutor, teacher's aide, or counselor assistant preferred. One year of experience living and working in a college residential setting preferred.
EXPECTED HIRING RANGE
$17.87/hr. Please note this position is not eligible for benefits.
