Position Summary:
The Safety Manager is responsible for leading and supporting Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) performance across field operations and job sites in the Massachusetts area. This role partners closely with operations leadership and field crews to drive compliance, reduce risk, and strengthen safety culture through coaching, auditing, incident investigation, and continuous improvement. Experience or familiarity with utility construction activities (e.g., gas/electric/telecom/water) is strongly preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Field Safety Leadership Provide visible safety leadership across job sites; coach supervisors and crews on safe work practices and hazard recognition. Support pre-task planning processes (Job Brief/JHA), including verification of controls for high-risk activities. Conduct routine field visits, safety observations, and inspections; document findings and ensure timely corrective action closure. Compliance and Risk Management Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., OSHA/EPA), company policies, and client requirements. Support yard and facility safety expectations to ensure standardized procedures are followed by team members, visitors, and customers. Support contractor/subcontractor safety expectations where applicable, including onboarding, orientation, and verification of compliance. Incident Prevention, Reporting, and Investigation Participate in and/or lead incident and near-miss investigations; determine root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions. Track leading and lagging indicators and provide clear reporting of performance measures and findings. Provide safety direction and support for corrective actions and recommendations to assure site improvements. Training and Field Coaching The Safety Manager is expected to provide required training and support safety talks with field supervision and team members. The role must be proficient in key EHS topics and capable of training/instructing teams in the following areas: Incident Response, CPR/First Aid, Hazard Communication, Energy Wheel, Human and Operational Performance, Excavation, Confined Space, Fleet/DOT, Hazard Identification, PPE, Environmental Compliance, and Defensive Driving. Additionally, the Safety Manager will conduct task evaluations and performance testing in the field and provide hands-on remedial instruction to drive standardization and improvement. Client and Operational Support Participate in customer/owner safety meetings, jobsite safety walks, and project planning meetings. Collaborate with operations to plan work safely in a production environment, strengthening safe work procedures and attitudes. Qualifications Required Associate degree or bachelor's degree in safety, or 5 years of experience. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record; ability to work outdoors on active job sites. Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Preferred Working knowledge of utility construction operations and hazards. Safety credential(s) such as OSHA 30, CHST, ASP/CSP, CUSP or equivalent (or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe). Physical Demands and Work Environment Regular field presence required; ability to walk job sites, navigate uneven terrain, and work around active construction operations. Must be able to wear required PPE and work in varying weather conditions. Work Authorization and Background Must be authorized to work in the United States. Employment may be contingent upon background screening and/or drug testing as permitted by law.
