Job Description

PURPOSE:
To analyze the work environment and procedures and inspect the workplaces for adherence to regulations on safety, health, and the environment. Also design programs to prevent injury to workers and damage to the environment. Assist operational management in the preparation and presentation of safety meeting and safety training topics. Assist in developing policies and procedures. Assist in monitoring and coordinating safety program including safety inspections, accident investigations, and safety training.
TYPICAL DUTIES
1. Coordinate health and safety systems 2. Identify hazards 3. Assess risks to health and safety 4. Put appropriate safety controls in place and provide advice about accident prevention and occupational health to management and employees 5. Participate in the development and implementation of safety programs such as defensive driving, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fire protection, and other OSHA safety compliance programs. 6. Advise the management and employees regarding safety protocols and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance as mandated by local, state, and federal agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). 7. Conduct routine and follow-up safety and hazard inspections of facilities. 8. Respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, fire, and smoke incidents; prepares reports of findings and submits recommendations. 9. Analyze accident and incident reports for trends; makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions and actions. 10. Lead and/or guide the work of lower level safety technicians and/or student employees. 11. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
GENERAL SKILLS
1. Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA and National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) safety standards. 2. Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel. 3. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports. 4. Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols. 5. Skill in performing safety inspections and ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards. 6. Knowledge of radiation safety procedures, standards, and protocols. 7. Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures. 8. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. 9. Skill in developing safety procedures and protocols. 10. Ability to investigate and analyze information and draw conclusions. 11. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Considerable physical activity. 2. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job. 3. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. 4. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor's degree and/or at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. 2. A valid driver's license will be required if a motor vehicle must be operated on the job. 3. Successful candidate must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.
