Job Title:
Health, Safety & Training Specialist Job Description The Health, Safety & Training Specialist develops, implements, and oversees comprehensive health, safety, and workforce training programs across environmental services operations. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations such as OSHA, EPA, and DOT, promotes a strong culture of safety, and supports employee development through targeted training initiatives. The position is ideal for a safety professional with a strong experience in environmental services, hazardous materials handling, and industrial safety who enjoys both strategic program development and hands-on field engagement. Responsibilities Develop and implement organization-wide health and safety strategies and internal policies that align with regulatory requirements and best practices. Create, update, and maintain site-specific safety plans, hazard assessments, and emergency response protocols for multiple locations. Conduct thorough risk assessments and establish safe operational procedures that identify, evaluate, and control all relevant hazards. Perform regular site inspections and audits to verify that health and safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices are properly implemented. Plan and promote practical, effective, and proactive methods—both preventative and remedial—for improving health and safety performance. Recommend and implement changes to work practices to ensure they remain safe and fully compliant with applicable legislation and regulations. Collaborate and negotiate with managers and employees to balance production objectives with safety requirements and eliminate potential conflicts. Provide expert guidance on specialty safety areas such as fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery, and occupational diseases. Support and assist with the rehabilitation and return-to-work processes for employees following accidents or injuries, ensuring safe and satisfactory reintegration. Stay current with new and evolving legislation, standards, and industry best practices, and liaise with officials from regulatory authorities to ensure ongoing compliance. Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies, third-party auditors, and external safety stakeholders. Maintain comprehensive records of inspections, incidents, accidents, and near misses, and produce detailed reports and statistics to support continuous improvement. Lead and participate in accident investigations and hazardous drills, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions and remedial training as needed. Design, deliver, and continuously improve onboarding and ongoing training programs for field technicians, drivers, and facility staff. Conduct in-house training sessions for managers and employees on health and safety issues, risks, and safe work practices. Maintain accurate training records and certifications, including HAZWOPER, confined space entry, forklift operation, and respirator fit testing. Coordinate with department managers to identify skill gaps and develop targeted training solutions to address them. Implement and manage Learning Management System (LMS) tools and e-learning modules to enhance training delivery and tracking. Facilitate toolbox talks, safety stand-downs, and monthly safety meetings to reinforce key safety messages and expectations. Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement initiatives, recognition programs, and consistent communication. Mentor supervisors and team leads on safety leadership, accountability, and effective coaching techniques. Collaborate with Human Resources on wellness initiatives, injury prevention strategies, and overall employee well-being programs. Produce management reports, newsletters, and bulletins to communicate safety performance, trends, and program updates to leadership and staff. Analyze safety performance data, incident trends, and training effectiveness to identify opportunities for improvement and recommend action plans. Be available to respond to environmental emergencies on a 24/7/365 basis, including on-site support when required. Essential Skills At least 5 years of experience in health and safety management within environmental services, waste management, or industrial sectors. Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state environmental and occupational health and safety regulations. Demonstrated experience in health and safety leadership within environmental services or industrial operations. Proven ability to develop and implement safety policies, procedures, and site-specific safety plans. Experience conducting risk assessments, hazard analyses, and safety audits in industrial or field environments. Proficiency in safety management, compliance, and construction or industrial site safety practices. Hands-on experience with hazardous materials handling and related regulatory standards. Ability to design, deliver, and manage safety training programs for diverse employee groups. Experience using Learning Management Systems (LMS) and e-learning tools for training delivery and tracking. Strong skills in data analysis related to safety performance, incident trends, and training effectiveness. Exceptional attention to detail, with strong observational, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate employees at all levels. Proven leadership and supervisory capabilities with a focus on building and sustaining a safety-first culture. Familiarity with safety equipment, including respiratory protection, confined space entry equipment, and industrial vehicles such as forklifts. Ability to travel to multiple sites and work in field conditions as needed. Availability to respond to environmental emergencies 24/7/365. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. Professional certifications preferred, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), OSHA 30/40, orHAZWOPER
Trainer. Valid occupational health and safety or related certifications strongly preferred. Experience in environmental services, waste management, or similar industrial operations. Experience in EHS (Environment, Health, and Safety) program development and implementation. Experience with safety audits, industrial safety, and site safety management. Strong understanding of environmental compliance and risk management practices. Ability to produce clear, concise, and actionable safety reports, presentations, and communications. Motivation to pursue ongoing professional development, additional certifications, and continuing education. Work Environment The role operates in a blended environment, with time split between office-based work and on-site field activities at environmental services and industrial locations. Office work involves program development, data analysis, report writing, and virtual training using standard business software and Learning Management System tools. Field work includes visiting active sites, facilities, and operations where exposure to outdoor conditions, industrial equipment, and hazardous materials may occur, while following all required safety protocols and using appropriate personal protective equipment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bartow, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $36.06 - $42.31/hr.
