We are seeking a highly motivated Sales Engineer / Mechanical Preconstruction Engineer to join our team in Richmond, VA . This is an excellent opportunity for a technically skilled professional who enjoys combining engineering expertise with client engagement and business development. Position Overview In this role, you will lead preconstruction efforts and help drive new project opportunities by developing innovative mechanical system solutions and building strong client relationships. You will partner with owners, general contractors, design professionals, and internal teams to deliver cost-effective, constructible designs for HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems. You will also support early project execution to ensure a seamless transition to operations. What You'll Do Preconstruction and Engineering Develop conceptual and detailed mechanical system designs for HVAC, piping, and plumbing Prepare budgets, estimates, and competitive project proposals Perform quantity takeoffs, equipment selection, and cost analysis Provide value engineering recommendations and constructability input Client Engagement and Business Development Participate in design-build and design-assist opportunities Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, engineers, and vendors Identify and pursue new project opportunities Represent Southern Air at project meetings, site visits, and presentations Project Startup Support Assist with scope review, subcontractor coordination, and project handoff Support early-stage construction activities to ensure alignment with scope, design, and budget Internal Collaboration Work closely with estimating, engineering, operations, and project management teams Maintain strong relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and subcontractors What We're Looking For Education and Certifications Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Engineering, or related field preferred Professional Engineer (PE) or Engineer in Training (EIT) strongly preferred Experience and Knowledge Experience with HVAC and mechanical system design, estimating, or construction Strong knowledge of commercial mechanical systems including HVAC, piping, and plumbing Familiarity with estimating software and takeoff tools preferred Solid understanding of construction and preconstruction processes Professional Skills Strong communication and presentation skills Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines High attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively Requirements Ability to pass pre-employment screening, including drug screen and background checks as required Commitment to company values, safety, and operational excellence Why Join Southern Air?
