As a Head Cashier at The Merc Co+op, you'll help lead the front-end team, support cashiers, and create a welcoming, efficient checkout experience for our community. This is more than a cashier role—it's a hands-on leadership position where you'll guide daily operations, support your team, and step in as the go-to leader when the Grocery Manager is not on shift. About the Role The Head Cashier works closely with the Grocery Manager to keep the front end running smoothly. You'll balance customer service, team support, and operational execution in a fast-paced retail environment while helping the department meet performance goals. Why You'll Love This Job Take on a leadership role with real responsibility and decision-making Help coach and develop teammates Build strong relationships with customers in a community-focused co-op Be part of a mission-driven organization focused on accessible, local food Gain experience that can lead to future leadership opportunities What You'll Do Customer Experience & Service Deliver friendly, prompt, and helpful service to every customer Handle customer concerns and challenging situations with professionalism Create a positive and welcoming front-end environment Team Leadership & Support Support, train, and coach checkout staff Help prioritize and delegate tasks based on store flow Step in as the front-end leader when the manager is not present Daily Operations Help guide front-end operations to meet sales, labor, and service goals Monitor workflow and adjust staffing or priorities as needed Support process improvements and department initiatives Cash Handling & Accuracy Oversee register operations and ensureaccuratetransactions Assiststaff with payments, refunds, and troubleshooting issues Follow all cash handling and accounting procedures What You'll Bring Required Experience with cash handling and point-of-sale systems Strong customer service skills Dependability, integrity, and accountability Ability to work 35+ hours per week Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills Preferred Previous leadership or supervisory experience in retail or grocery Experience training or coaching team members Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask Comfort with basic reporting and cash reconciliation Familiarity with Microsoft Office and digital communication tools Schedule & Work Environment Full-time role (35+ hours/week) Requires standing and walking for most of the shift Involveslifting upto 50lbs, bending, and reaching Work may include exposure to varying temperatures Pay & Benefits $16.32 - $17.50/hour 20% employee discount Paid time off and vacation accrual Medical, dental, and vision insurance (30+ hours/week) Free life insurance and Long term disability insurance 401(k) with up to 3% match Birthday & anniversary recognition Free community classes About The Merc Co+op At The Merc Co+op, we believe everyone deserves access to affordable, healthy, delicious food.
