Job Description
Position Summary The Community Engagement Representative conducts face-to-face public outreach to provide accurate, fact-based information about Alaska's commercial fishing industry and its role in local communities, food systems, and the state economy. This is not a sales or political advocacy role. The position focuses on respectful conversations, listening, and public education in everyday community settings. Representatives meet Alaskans where they already are — at their doors, community events, fairs, markets, and civic gatherings — answering questions and helping residents better understand a complex sector that affects their lives. Success in this role is measured by quality interactions, professionalism, and trust built with the public, not by persuading people to hold a specific opinion. Core Responsibilities No prior subject matter expertise is required. Public Event Engagement Staff booths at fairs, markets, and community events Engage passersby in informal educational discussions Represent the organization professionally in busy public environments Answer questions from curious, skeptical, or critical participants Relationship Building Build familiarity and trust through repeated presence Identify recurring concerns or misconceptions Share community feedback with supervisors Help connect interested individuals to additional resources Professional Conduct Remain calm and respectful in disagreement Avoid debate or argument escalation Follow all training and communication guidelines Maintain strict non-partisan, non-candidate-focused communication What This Job Is NOT Not telemarketing Not petition gathering Not campaigning for candidates Not debating or arguing with residents Not selling products or asking for donationsIdeal Candidate Profile We are looking for people others naturally feel comfortable talking to.

Teachers, guides, service workers, students, veterans, or community volunteers People comfortable talking with strangers in a friendly way Individuals who can stay composed when conversations become skeptical Those curious enough to learn — not memorize scripts Required Skills & Abilities Friendly, approachable demeanor Ability to listen without interrupting Clear conversational communication (not rehearsed speeches) Reliability and punctuality Ability to walk outdoors for extended periods in variable weather Comfort working independently and in small teams Preferred (Not Required) Alaska residency or familiarity with local communities Customer service, outreach, teaching, or guiding experience Knowledge of fishing, maritime, or resource industries Experience interacting with diverse viewpoints Additional Job Specifics Training Provided All representatives receive paid training including: Industry basics and common public questions Conversation and de-escalation techniques Legal and ethical communication guidelines Safety and field procedures Work Environment Evenings and weekends required. Work occurs in real community settings: Residential neighborhoods Outdoor events and public gatherings Variable Alaska weather conditions Key Performance Expectations Representatives succeed when they: Conduct respectful, genuine conversations Always demonstrate professionalism Accurately relay public feedback Improve public comfort discussing the topic This role prioritizes credibility over volume.
