Job Description
The Organizer/Canvass Coordinator will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of the field strategy for campaigns designed to educate, activate, and empower people on issues related to the criminal legal system and all of its intersections. The Organizer/Canvass Coordinator will assist in the training and management of a canvass team that builds relationships in neighborhoods (prioritizing those of lower socioeconomic status and predominantly people of color) to build a powerful broad base of members that are able to win issue-based and electoral campaigns birthed out of community need. Building and maintaining our base and coalition membership is the goal. Upon immediate hire, the Canvass Organizer/Coordinator will be trained to develop the organizing and leadership skills needed to deploy our intensive Year Round Civic Engagement Plan and begin hiring and managing a team of (4) canvassers in phone banking, text banking and door-to-door canvassing/organizing. The Organizer/Canvass The coordinator will also co-facilitate APA's coalition and community meetings. The scope of programming will vary, but will likely always include these aspects, so applicants should be flexible and able to quickly adapt to changing work environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Directing a team of
Canvassers:
○ Maintain effective relationships with all canvassers, utilizing horizontal-leadership and empathetic skills in understanding and adjusting to their needs and supporting them in doing their best work. ○ Hold the team accountable for reaching goals and building positive relationships with community members through direct contact. ○ Track and maintain data to ensure goals are met and canvassers are accountable and properly supported. ○ Document ongoing activities via photographs, social media hashtag handles, and other methods. ○ Assist with hiring and training of the canvass team ○ Maintain a positive and safe work environment ○ Work with the Director of Civic Engagement & Voter Contact and CEO to develop and adjust field programs throughout a campaign.
Developing and Executing Campaign Strategy:
○ Working with the Director of Civic Engagement & Voter Contact to create and execute campaigns ○ Building relationships and partnerships with allies and stakeholders ○ Planning and executing meetings, events, actions, or other strategic activities that further The goals of campaigns. ○ Create canvass scripts and messaging. ○ Participate in training and maintaining steady and reliable communication with canvassers and directors. ○ Work with the digital organizer/communications team providing content and to promote and plan events, resources, actions, etc. ○ Organizing and basebuilding ○ Facilitate APA Coalition & community meetings ○ Represent the organization at local, state, and national coalition tables
Qualifications and Skills:
Passion for the mission: Determination to end the current injustices reflected in the criminal legal system, engage and empower Black and marginalized communities and a thorough understanding of the root causes of entry into the criminal justice system.
Leadership:
Should be proactive, work with minimal supervision and be able to hold others to a high standard of accountability.
Superior interpersonal skills: Ability to work with a diverse array of individuals and communities;ability to demonstrate emotional intelligence.
Flexibility:
Ability to learn and adapt quickly in a fast-paced work environment.
Oral and written communication skills: Ability to be heard and understood, to meet people where they're at, and adjust to various communication needs.
Commitment to understanding race, class, gender and other equity issues as part of the work as well as the impact these structural issues have on our collective work.
Knowledge of relevant public policy and electoral systems.
Use a variety of platforms such as VAN, ThruTEXT, Google Suites, Slack, Zoom and other web conferencing software.
Prior experience in managing a team
At least 3-6 years of experience in running field programming
Access to a vehicle is highly preferred; reliable transportation is a must
Other Information:
The work schedule is 11:00am - 7:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, but may include evenings for events/meetings. Candidates requiring a strictly 9:00am to 5:00pm schedule will not be a good fit for this position as the hours are adapted to the need. This is a full-time exempt position
