Whistle Stop Shop Retail Sales Associate Position Description:
Retail Sales Associate The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (FRM) seeks a part-time Retail Sales Associate to assist customers in the "Whistle Stop Shop" Museum Store at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This position is part of a small team of retail sales associates and volunteers, led by a store manager and an assistant store manager. Employees of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and their immediate families are eligible for free admission to the museum and discounts in the museum store. About the
Employer:
The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (FRM) was formed in 1983 and is chartered and licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an associate nonprofit organization which assists the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in fulfilling its mission to document, preserve and interpret the rich and diverse heritage of railroading. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania annually hosts about 120,000 in person visitors annually, and FRM staff and volunteers play a key role in the daily operations of the Museum in visitor services, education, restoration, library and archives, administration, advancement and the museum store. Presently, the FRM has about 2,000 members from many U. S. states and several foreign countries.
Work Location:
Work is conducted in a retail setting at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, located at 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, PA 17579. The Whistle Stop Shop is located just inside the main entrance on the first floor of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
Schedule:
This is a part-time, hourly position for 15 to 20 hours per week (or up to 37.5 hours bi-weekly). Compensation starts at $17.31 per hour. This position involves mainly weekday and weekend work, as well as occasional evening events. Scheduling will be coordinated with the store manager. The museum is currently open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and Sunday, 12 PM to 4 PM. Qualities Needed for the
Position :
ü Kindness, courtesy, and excellent customer service skills and the ability to assist visitors of all ages. ü Possess a willingness to learn about the museum, our product, the surrounding area and its offerings. ü Must be able to operate a cash register and be accurate with currency, credit/debit cards and checks. Trained with our point-of-sale system will be provided. ü Must be able to lift at least 10 pounds, be on your feet the majority of a work shift and occasionally use a step ladder to reach higher shelves. ü Must be punctual and ready to work. ü Applicants must be 17 or older.
Specific Job Requirements:
  • ü Vacuum rugs & floor (or dust mop floor) ü Dust Shelves, displays, and products as needed ü Glass clean shelves ü Disinfect cash wrap area as needed
  • ü Set up and cash out store point-of-sale (POS) system ü Ring up sales, correcting errors, processing voids, returns and discounts ü Sell FRM memberships and special event tickets ü Close Out daily transactions and prove all tenders to reports ü Assure end-of-day receipts and change bag are in safe ü Check change bag daily to ensure sufficient change, recording data on daily sheet
  • ü Attend to customer needs by answering questions, assisting them in locating merchandise ü Help monitor security of the store ü Price and restock merchandise ü Keep inventory areas organized and filled, which may require use of a step stool or ladder ü Bring broken, damaged or outdated items to the "stock room" for write off ü Inform manager or assistant manager when items are running low ü Take telephone messages including mail order sales requests ü Help with semi-annual inventory counts Please submit letter of interest and/or resume, and three references to Patrick C.
