Our client, a multi-discipline, full-service consulting and design engineering firm based in Mobile, Alabama, is seeking an experienced Piping Department Manager to lead and oversee its piping design team. This individual will be responsible for managing department personnel, ensuring technical excellence, maintaining project schedules and budgets, and supporting business growth initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in piping design and engineering support for industrial facilities, along with strong leadership, project management, and client relationship skills. The Piping Department Manager will provide technical guidance, mentor designers and drafters, coordinate multidisciplinary projects, and ensure the successful execution of piping design deliverables for clients in the chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, power, and other industrial sectors.
Responsibilities:
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of piping designers and drafters, including staffing, performance management, recruiting, and professional development. Oversee departmental operations, resource allocation, standards, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives. Manage piping design activities across multiple projects to ensure quality, schedule, budget, and client requirements are met. Coordinate with project managers, engineers, clients, and other disciplines to support successful project execution and resolve technical challenges. Provide technical leadership for piping system design, including layouts, isometrics, equipment arrangements, material take-offs, and construction deliverables. Review and approve design documents for accuracy, constructability, compliance, and adherence to industry standards and company procedures. Support the implementation and utilization of AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Navisworks, laser scanning, and related design technologies. Develop and maintain client relationships, participate in proposals and project reviews, and identify opportunities for business growth. Lead field walk-downs and provide technical support during construction, startup, and commissioning activities.
Quali fications:
Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, technical trade school certification, or equivalent experience Minimum 10 years of piping design experience in industrial facilities. Minimum 5 years of leadership, supervisory, or project management experience overseeing piping design teams. Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Plant 3D, and Navisworks. Strong knowledge of piping systems, materials, supports, flexibility analysis, and industrial design practices. Experience supporting projects within chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, power generation, and other industrial markets. Demonstrated experience managing multiple projects, schedules, budgets, and personnel simultaneously. Familiarity with laser scanning technologies and point cloud integration is preferred. Strong understanding of multidisciplinary engineering workflows and project execution processes. Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to build client relationships and contribute to business development efforts.
