This role requires a strong eye for quality, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a high-turn, perishable product category in a fast-paced retail environment. Core Focus of the Role Product quality, freshness, and presentation Inventory management and shrink control Vendor relationships and sourcing Department merchandising and visual standards Financial performance (sales, waste, margin) Team leadership and execution Key Responsibilities Oversee all daily operations of the produce department, ensuring product quality, organization, and execution Maintain a strong floor presence, actively managing product levels, presentation, and team performance Ensure all produce meets company standards for: Freshness, quality, appearance, food safety Conduct regular quality checks and remove any product that does not meet standards Maintain proper rotation (FIFO) and ensure accurate dating and labeling Oversee receiving of deliveries, ensuring accuracy, quality, and proper handling Ensure all produce is stored correctly to maintain shelf life and reduce spoilage Merchandising & Presentation Own the visual presentation of the produce department at all times Ensure displays are: Fully stocked, clean and organized, visually appealing, aligned with brand standards Adjust displays throughout the day based on product movement and freshness Maintain clear, accurate, and consistent signage and pricing Execute seasonal displays and promotions in partnership with leadership Ensure department consistently reflects a high-end, premium market experience Vendor & Sourcing Management Build and maintain strong relationships with produce vendors and distributors Coordinate ordering schedules and delivery timelines based on business needs Evaluate product quality, pricing, and vendor performance Address quality issues or discrepancies directly with vendors Partner with leadership on sourcing decisions, seasonal product selection, and cost strategies Maintain awareness of market pricing, seasonality, and product availability Financial Performance & Inventory Control Manage department financial performance, including: Sales, shrink (waste/spoilage), product cost, margin Monitor daily sales trends and adjust ordering and merchandising accordingly Control shrink through: Proper ordering, Inventory management, product rotation, quality control Conduct regular inventory counts and ensure accuracy Identify trends and implement strategies to improve performance Labor & Team Management Lead, train, and develop produce team members Ensure team members understand product standards, handling procedures, and expectations Monitor staffing levels and support scheduling based on business needs Ensure productivity, efficiency, and accountability across the team Provide real-time coaching and performance feedback Address performance issues promptly and consistently Leadership & Team Development Lead from the floor with strong presence, urgency, and attention to detail Set clear expectations and hold team accountable to standards Build a team culture rooted in: Accountability, pride in product, attention to detail, consistency Lead training of new hires Ensure all team members are properly trained in product handling and safety Performance Management & Documentation Document coaching conversations, performance issues, and corrective actions Partner with HR on employee relations and progressive discipline Ensure documentation is accurate, consistent, and aligned with company policies Maintain fairness and consistency in managing team performance Compliance & Food Safety Ensure compliance with all food safety and sanitation standards Maintain proper handling, storage, and rotation of all produce Ensure compliance with California labor laws, including: Meal and rest break compliance, overtime regulations. accurate timekeeping Maintain a safe working environment and enforce proper equipment use Opening Team Responsibilities Support hiring and onboarding of produce team Assist in setting up department layout, displays, and workflows Establish standards for quality, merchandising, and operations Provide feedback on systems and processes during opening phase Adapt quickly to evolving processes and support continuous improvement Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with kitchen, juice bar, and front-of-house teams to support overall market operations Communicate product availability and quality issues across departments Support overall store operations as needed to ensure business success Qualifications 3+ years of experience in produce, grocery, or retail management Strong knowledge of produce quality, handling, and seasonal products Proven ability to manage perishable inventory and control shrink Experience with ordering, vendor management, and inventory systems Strong merchandising and visual presentation skills Ability to manage a high-volume, fast-paced environment Working knowledge of California labor laws Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills High attention to detail and strong sense of product quality Flexible availability, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk continuously for extended periods (8+ hours per shift) Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 lbs regularly Ability to work in refrigerated and variable temperature environments Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive tasks Ability to handle and move produce safely and efficiently Ability to maintain awareness of surroundings and ensure safety standards
