Job Description

WORK SUMMARY
The Rental and Gift Shop Sales Manager is responsible for coordinating facility rentals and overseeing the daily operations of the museum's gift shop. This position serves as a key point of contact for visitors and rental clients, ensuring high-quality customer service while supporting revenue generation through rentals and retail sales. Successful candidates are organized, detail-oriented, and committed to providing exceptional guest experiences that align with the mission and historic character of the museum.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
FACILITY RENTALS (50% of job function)
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for rental inquiries, including historic venues, garden weddings, and special event spaces.
  • Schedule and conduct tours of rental spaces; assist clients in planning events in accordance with museum policies.
  • Prepare contracts, process deposits and payments, and maintain accurate rental calendars.
  • Coordinate communication with clients, staff, and vendors to ensure seamless event execution.
  • Serve as on-site contact for rentals.
GIFT SHOP OPERATIONS
(30% of job function)
  • Manage daily gift shop operations, including merchandising, inventory, pricing, and displays.
  • Provide excellent customer service and promote museum membership and retail offerings.
  • Process transactions and reconcile daily sales reports.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and visually appealing retail space consistent with museum branding.
VISITOR SERVICES
(10% of job function)
  • Greet visitors and represent the museum in a professional and welcoming manner.
  • Respond to phone and email inquiries regarding rentals, programs, tours, and retail items.
  • Assist with front desk operations, including ticketing and visitor orientation.
ADMINISTRATIVE & MARKETING SUPPORT
(10% of job function)
  • Maintain organized records for rentals, contracts, and inventory.
  • Prepare reports on rental activity and retail performance.
  • Assist in marketing rental spaces and gift shop items through digital platforms and social media.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Event setup and breakdown, including arranging tables and chairs.
  • Support museum staff with maintaining public spaces and preparing buildings for visitors.
  • Occasionally assist with special events, programs, and fundraising efforts.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills with staff, volunteers, and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience with point-of-sale systems and basic office software.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
Preferred:
  • Experience in event coordination, retail, or hospitality.
  • Interest in museums, history, or nonprofit organizations.

  • Work environment: Work takes place across a multi-building historic site, including indoor and outdoor spaces, with seasonal weather conditions.
SALARY AND TANGIBLE BENEFITS
Ellwood House Museum offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The salary for this position is $20.00 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. Holiday pay. Healthcare coverage is not offered through the museum.
