Job Description

Overview We are looking for an experienced Meat Department Manager to lead the daily operations of our meat department. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, well-stocked, and profitable meat department while ensuring product quality, food safety, strong customer service, and proper staff coverage. The Meat Department Manager plays a hands-on role in the department, including cutting meat, managing production, maintaining displays, ordering product, controlling shrink, training employees, and writing the department schedule. This position requires strong meat-cutting knowledge, leadership ability, and the ability to keep the department running smoothly in a fast-paced retail grocery environment. Duties and Responsibilities Oversee the daily operation of the meat department, including production, merchandising, inventory, sanitation, and customer service. Cut, trim, grind, wrap, weigh, price, and display fresh meat products according to company standards and customer needs. Prepare standard and specialty cuts of beef, pork, poultry, and other meat products while maintaining proper quality, yield, and portion control. Maintain full, clean, fresh, and attractive meat cases throughout the day. Monitor product freshness, rotation, dating, storage, and temperature control to ensure food safety and reduce shrink. Order product and manage inventory levels to support sales while minimizing waste and out-of-stock conditions. Follow company procedures for pricing, markdowns, product rotation, and shrink control. Write and maintain the meat department schedule to ensure proper coverage based on business needs, sales volume, and department workload. Train, coach, and direct meat department employees on proper cutting, wrapping, stocking, sanitation, safety, customer service, and department procedures. Assign daily tasks and follow up to ensure work is completed accurately and on time. Maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitation in all cutting areas, coolers, freezers, display cases, equipment, and department workspaces. Safely operate and maintain meat department equipment, including knives, saws, grinders, slicers, tenderizers, scales, wrapping machines, and other related equipment. Ensure all equipment is cleaned, sanitized, and used safely according to company and food safety standards. Assist customers with product selection, special orders, custom cuts, and questions regarding meat preparation. Support sales through effective merchandising, product presentation, promotional displays, and proper case management. Communicate department needs, staffing concerns, product issues, equipment concerns, and operational updates to store management. Help maintain a positive, productive, and accountable work environment within the department. Follow all company policies, food safety requirements, safety procedures, and applicable regulations. Qualifications Prior meat-cutting experience required. Previous meat department leadership, supervisory, or management experience preferred. Strong knowledge of meat products, cutting techniques, product handling, food safety, sanitation, and department operations. Ability to safely operate meat department equipment, including knives, saws, grinders, slicers, scales, and wrapping equipment. Ability to lead, train, coach, and direct department employees. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage ordering, inventory, production, scheduling, merchandising, and daily department priorities. Strong customer service skills with the ability to assist customers professionally and accurately. Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment while maintaining quality, cleanliness, safety, and attention to detail. Basic computer, inventory, pricing, and retail math skills preferred. Must be dependable, safety-minded, and able to work flexible hours based on business needs. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull product as required in a retail meat department. Ability to work in coolers, freezers, and refrigerated areas. Ability to safely use knives, saws, grinders, slicers, and other meat department equipment. Ability to bend, reach, twist, and perform repetitive tasks as needed. Position Summary The Meat Department Manager is responsible for keeping the department clean, safe, stocked, profitable, and properly staffed. This role requires a hands-on leader who understands meat cutting, takes pride in product quality, supports employees, serves customers well, and keeps the department operating at a high standard every day.
Pay:
$45,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
