Job Description
Description The Heavy Equipment Shop Manager provides leadership and operational oversight for all maintenance and repair activities within the Duncan Shop supporting a civil construction fleet of approximately 450 machines plus support equipment . This position manages shop technicians, coordinates shop maintenance activities with field service personnel and fleet dispatch, and ensures the reliability, safety, and cost-effective lifecycle management of company equipment. The role oversees predictive maintenance programs, manages complex mechanical diagnostics and repairs, tracks equipment performance metrics, and ensures compliance with OEM standards and regulatory requirements. The Shop Manager also contributes to equipment lifecycle planning, procurement recommendations, and technician workforce development. The position works closely with the Field Maintenance Manager, Fleet Dispatcher, Operations leadership, accounting staff, and equipment vendors to ensure equipment availability meets project demands while maintaining effective cost control and safety Key Responsibilities Provide shop maintenance leadership for a fleet of approximately 450 heavy machines plus support equipment . Maintain high equipment availability to support multiple construction projects simultaneously. Coordinate shop repair activities with field maintenance operations. Support equipment lifecycle management from acquisition through retirement. Manage daily operations of the heavy equipment repair shop. Conduct daily Shop JSA meetings and communicate the Plan of the Day . Assign and prioritize technician work orders. Develop weekly maintenance schedules based on operational priorities. Monitor shop productivity and repair completion timelines. Maintain safe, organized, and efficient shop operations. Create and maintain SOP's for common tasks.
Equipment Maintenance Oversight:
Direct and supervise repair and maintenance activities for equipment including: Articulated dump trucks Excavators Dozers Wheel loaders Motor graders Compactors RCC machinery Compact track loaders Other heavy civil construction equipment Responsibilities include diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine issues while ensuring repairs meet OEM and company standards.Predictive Maintenance Programs:
Implement and oversee predictive maintenance schedules. Monitor equipment service intervals and inspection compliance. Manage incoming and outgoing equipment inspections . Track equipment condition throughout its service life. Identify recurring maintenance issues and implement reliability improvements. Undercarriage Management Manage the company's Undercarriage Management Program . Analyze measurement data and recommend repair or replacement actions. Monitor lifecycle costs related to undercarriage wear. Coordinate inspections and repairs with vendors and field maintenance teams.Equipment Lifecycle Management:
The Shop Manager plays a key role in managing long-term equipment performance and lifecycle costs.Responsibilities include:
Evaluating repair strategies versus replacement decisions. Reviewing RPL% (Repair Parts and Labor as Percent of Machine Cost) when considering major repairs or refurbishments. Providing cost estimates for major repairs. Supporting long-term fleet capital planning. Recommending fleet standardization improvements.Fleet Standardization Strategy:
Support equipment division initiatives to standardize equipment models and reduce maintenance complexity by: Identifying preferred manufacturers and models based on reliability. Providing feedback on equipment performance and serviceability. Supporting strategic vendor relationships. Reducing fleet complexity and improving parts availability.Major Component Rebuild Evaluation:
Assist leadership in determining appropriate rebuild strategies for major components including engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps and motors, final drives. Evaluation criteria include machine hours, repair history, lifecycle cost, and expected remaining service life.Equipment Replacement Planning:
Provide recommendations for equipment replacement based on: Increasing repair costs Declining reliability or availability Excessive downtime affecting project productivity Obsolete equipment or parts availability Safety or regulatory concerns These evaluations support long-term capital equipment planning.Maintenance Performance Metrics:
Monitor and improve maintenance performance using key metrics including: Equipment availability (RED down events/1,000 hours) Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) Preventative maintenance compliance Repair turnaround time Rework Frequency Maintenance cost per operating hour RPL% trends Shop labor productivityMaintenance Systems & Technology:
Utilize company maintenance management systems to track repairs and work orders. Maintain accurate service and maintenance records. Support the use of telematics and diagnostic systems to monitor equipment health. Analyze fleet data to improve reliability and maintenance planning.Staff Leadership & Workforce Development:
Leadership Supervise shop technicians and maintenance personnel. Provide technical guidance and mentorship. Maintain a high-performing maintenance team. Training & Development Implement technician training and apprenticeship programs. Train staff in equipment diagnostics and repair procedures. Lead safety and technical training sessions. Succession Planning Identify and develop technicians for future leadership roles. Maintain long-term workforce development within the equipment division.Safety & Compliance:
Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements. Conduct safety meetings. shop inspections, and safety observations. Oversee implementation of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Confined Space Entry (CSE) Identify and correct unsafe working conditions.
