My client is currently seeking an Assistant Shop Manager for a heavy commercial construction company. You will assist in daily facility operations, heavy equipment maintenance, and tool/material logistics. As an Assistant Shop Manager you will assist in maximizing operational efficiency, managing inventory, ensuring OSHA compliance, and supervising shop mechanics to minimize equipment downtime. Key Responsibilities Equipment & Fleet Maintenance
- Supervise and assist with repairs, servicing, and preventative maintenance of a mixed fleet of heavy construction equipment (e.
g., excavators, loaders, dozers) and commercial vehicles. Assist in diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues to reduce field downtime Perform regular safety and operational inspections on tools, machinery, and rigging equipment before dispatch. Inventory & Parts Management
- Manage the procurement, tracking, and organization of spare parts, consumables, and building materials.
- Maintain accurate inventory logs using operational efficiency software and ensure the physical shop and yard are kept clean and organized.
- Coordinate the safe loading/unloading and transfer of materials and heavy equipment to and from commercial job sites. Staff Leadership & Safety
- Help the Shop Manager schedule and delegate tasks to shop personnel, mechanics, and yard staff.
- Assist in training employees on proper tool usage, equipment operation, and company policies.
- Enforce strict compliance with OSHA, EPA, and internal company safety regulations at all times. Qualifications & Requirements
Experience:
3-5+ years of experience in heavy equipment repair, mixed fleet maintenance, or construction shop operations.
Technical Skills:
Strong working knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical schematics.
Computer Skills:
Proficiency with inventory management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and basic fleet management software.
Certifications:
Valid Driver's License and clean driving record required.
Physical Ability:
Capability to lift heavy objects (50+ lbs) and perform physical tasks in various weather conditions and shop environments.
