SCOPE:
The Shop Manager oversees daily shop operations, ensuring all fabrication, assembly, machining, and production activities meet company quality standards, customer requirements, and applicable safety regulations. The shop manager also handles installation plans and customer site installation activities at the end of projects. This role manages personnel, workflow, scheduling, inventory, and equipment readiness while supporting continuous improvement initiatives. Responsibilities include documentation accuracy, identification of nonconformities, corrective action support, and maintaining compliance with the company's quality management system.
JOB RESPONSIBILITES
Shop Operations & Management Overseeing daily shop activities including fabrication, assembly, machining, and production tasks. Assigning work based on project priorities, skill sets, and deadlines. Ensuring all work aligns with engineering drawings, specifications, and project plans. Monitoring workflow to maintain efficiency, quality, and on-time delivery. Assist in building Panels and other electrical assembly work. Assist with mechanical assembly in shop and on site at customer. 2. Personnel Leadership and Coordination Supervising shop technicians, assemblers, welders, and support staff. Providing training, coaching, and performance feedback. Ensuring team adherence to safety procedures, ISO processes, and company standards. Supporting staffing needs, onboarding, and cross-training initiatives. 3. Quality Control and Compliance Verifying work quality through inspections, measurements, and documentation review. Identifying nonconformities related to fabrication, assembly, documentation, or equipment. Initiating corrective actions following ISO workflows. Ensuring compliance with OSHA, UL, NFPA, and internal safety requirements. 4. Equipment, Tools, and Facility Management Overseeing maintenance, calibration, and readiness of shop tools, machinery, and equipment. Coordinating repairs, replacements, and preventive maintenance. Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment. Ensuring proper use and storage of tools, materials, and hazardous substances. 5. Inventory and Material Control Managing raw materials, consumables, hardware, and shop supplies. Coordinating with purchasing to maintain adequate inventory levels. Verifying incoming materials meet specifications and documenting discrepancies. Tracking material usage and supporting cost-control initiatives. 6. Documentation and Reporting Maintaining accurate records of production activities, material usage, and equipment maintenance. Updating build documentation, traveler packets, and shop logs as required. Reporting project status, issues, and progress to management and project teams. Supporting continuous improvement by documenting recurring issues and recommending solutions. 7. Collaboration and Communication Working closely with engineers, project managers, quality personnel, and technicians. Communicating expectations, priorities, and changes clearly and professionally. Supporting project meetings, build reviews, and cross-department coordination. Remaining flexible to support occasional work outside standard hours when required. 8. Safety and Regulatory Compliance Enforcing safety protocols and ensuring proper PPE usage. Conducting safety checks, audits, and incident reporting. Ensuring shop activities comply with OSHA, NFPA, and company safety standards. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to support team objectives and organizational goals.
AUTHORITY
Authorized to assign tasks, adjust schedules, and allocate resources to meet project requirements. Authorized to pause production activities to address safety concerns, quality issues, or nonconformities. Authorized to initiate corrective actions within ISO procedures. Authorized to verify and approve completed shop work prior to project handoff. Authorized to develop and adjust installation plans to meet project requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or
Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree preferred. 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or automation shop environment. Experience supervising teams and managing shop operations. Strong understanding of fabrication, assembly, machining, and mechanical/electrical build processes. Deep understanding of panel building, electrical standards, and mechanical drawings.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, or remain on the production floor for extended periods during system testing, troubleshooting, or commissioning. Capability to lift, carry, or move equipment and components typically up to 25-40 lbs. Comfort working in industrial environments, including around machinery, robotics, electrical panels, and manufacturing equipment. Manual dexterity for wiring, panel work, and use of hand tools during system build or debug activities. Ability to bend, kneel, reach, or work in confined spaces when accessing control panels, sensors, or machine components. Visual acuity to read schematics, wiring diagrams, HMI screens, and instrumentation with precision. Comfort climbing ladders or accessing elevated platforms when required for equipment installation or maintenance. Tolerance for varying environmental conditions, such as noise, heat, cold, or dust, depending on the customer facility. Ability to travel to customer sites for commissioning, support, or project work as needed.
Other Skill or Ability:
Proficient in troubleshooting electrical and control system issues using schematics, meters, and diagnostic tools. Capable of navigating PLC and robot interfaces to support troubleshooting and system recovery. Skilled in selecting and installing sensors, actuators, safety devices, and related automation components. Strong communication skills for working with engineers, electricians, customers, and equipment suppliers. Willingness to seek assistance when encountering technical challenges that impact progress. Proficient in reading engineering drawings, schematics, and build documentation. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical and assembly issues. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrated ability to follow ISO procedures and maintain accurate documentation. Demonstrated ability to follow ISO compliant procedures, maintain accurate documentation, and support continuous improvement.
