Position Overview Capital Lumber is seeking an experienced and motivated Lumber Sales & Takeoffs Specialist to join our growing team. This role combines sales, estimating, project planning, and customer service. You will work directly with contractors, builders, remodelers, and homeowners to provide expert product recommendations, accurate takeoffs, detailed material lists, and project estimates. The ideal candidate understands construction plans, framing materials, and lumber products and can confidently guide customers from blueprint to completed order. Experience creating takeoffs and material lists is essential. Knowledge of SketchUp and the ability to create simple plans, layouts, and drawings is highly preferred. This position offers an opportunity to play a key role in the continued growth of one of Boise's oldest and most respected lumber yards. ResponsibilitiesSales & Customer Service Build and maintain strong relationships with contractors, builders, remodelers, and retail customers Provide exceptional customer service and technical product support Identify customer needs and recommend appropriate building materials and solutions Generate and follow up on sales leads Prepare quotes, bids, and project estimates Upsell complementary products and services when appropriate Manage customer accounts and maintain ongoing communication throughout projects Estimating & Takeoffs Review blueprints, construction plans, specifications, and project documents Prepare accurate lumber and building material takeoffs Generate detailed material lists for residential and light commercial projects Identify potential project challenges and recommend solutions Collaborate with customers to optimize material usage and reduce waste Ensure estimates are accurate, complete, and profitable Project Planning & Design Support Assist customers with project planning and material selection Utilize SketchUp or similar software to create simple layouts, conceptual drawings, and project visualizations Interpret construction drawings and assist customers in understanding material requirements Support contractors and homeowners with design-related questions and project planning Business Development Develop new contractor and builder relationships Maintain and grow existing customer accounts Participate in lead generation and sales initiatives Work closely with management on marketing and business development efforts Represent Capital Lumber professionally within the community and industry Administrative & CRM Management Utilize CRM software to track opportunities, customer interactions, and project activity Maintain accurate customer records and project information Follow up on outstanding quotes and sales opportunities Assist with inventory-related questions and special-order products QualificationsRequired Minimum 3 years of experience in lumber sales, building materials sales, estimating, construction, or a related field Strong understanding of lumber products, framing materials, engineered wood products, and construction methods Proven experience performing takeoffs and preparing material lists from blueprints and construction plans Ability to read and interpret residential and light commercial construction drawings Excellent communication and customer service skills Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously Proficiency with computers and common business software Valid driver's license and reliable transportation Preferred Experience working for a lumber yard, building supply company, contractor, or construction-related business Experience with SketchUp or similar design software Ability to create simple plans, drawings, layouts, and project concepts Knowledge of engineered wood products, siding, decking, and specialty building materials Experience with CRM software such as Salesforce or similar systems Existing relationships within the Boise construction industry What We're Looking For The ideal candidate is: Customer-focused and relationship-driven Comfortable communicating with contractors, builders, and homeowners Detail-oriented and highly organized Self-motivated and capable of working independently Knowledgeable about construction and building materials Comfortable reading blueprints and creating takeoffs A problem solver who enjoys helping customers find solutions Excited to contribute to a growing local business Compensation & Benefits Competitive hourly wage or salary based on experience Performance and sales incentives Paid time off Opportunities for advancement Employee discounts on products Ongoing training and professional development Opportunity to work with one of Boise's most established local businesses Why Capital Lumber?
