Job Description

Overview We're looking for someone who has been in the trenches long enough to know what a good brokerage looks like and is ready to build a team around it. Star Freight Services is an asset-based carrier with a growing brokerage division in Reno, NV. We're hiring a Director of Freight Brokerage to help us build this operation the right way; developing carrier relationships, growing a shipper book, and bringing on and coaching a team of brokers who can produce consistent, profitable volume. This is a ground-floor opportunity for someone looking for an opportunity grow. What You'll Be Doing You'll be doing two things simultaneously: producing as a broker and building as a leader. We're not looking for someone who's ready to step back from freight. We need someone with enough experience to broker well, and also the team building capacity to create a system that grows beyond them. On the brokerage side, you'll be: Prospecting and closing new shipper accounts and growing the ones you bring in Building and maintaining a carrier network that gives the team a real coverage advantage Pricing freight competitively while protecting margin at the account and load level Setting the standard for what clean operational execution looks like on your team's board On the leadership side, you'll be: Hiring broker candidates with the right combination of coachability and commercial drive Building an onboarding process that gets new hires productive in their first 30-60 days Coaching individual brokers through deal reviews, call feedback, and regular 1:1s Holding the team accountable to service standards without micromanaging them Keeping an eye on team margin trends and getting in front of problems before they compound What We're Looking For You've been in freight brokerage for at least four years. You've built a real book of business through outbound effort. You've trained or mentored at least one other broker and you know the difference between telling someone what to do and actually developing them. Beyond experience, we need someone who is: A builder — you're energized by starting something, not just running something Credible on the floor — brokers will follow your lead because you've done the work, not just because of the title Honest and direct — with your team, with shippers, and with leadership Margin-aware — you understand the economics of this business and you coach to them Patient but accountable — you develop people with intention and hold them to a standard Experience at an asset-based carrier or brokerage with strong operational culture is a significant plus. So is familiarity with the dry van or flatbed markets we run in the Western 11. Technical Requirements Proven experience in supply chain management, transportation management systems, logistics sales, or freight brokerage leadership roles. Strong knowledge of transportation planning, carrier sales, B2B sales strategies, and inside sales techniques. Demonstrated ability to manage accounts effectively while leading negotiations on contracts and pricing structures. Familiarity with 3PL services, NVOCC operations, FDA regulations related to logistics, and transportation regulations. Proficiency in CRM software like Salesforce or similar platforms; experience with EDI systems and AS400 is highly desirable. Excellent leadership skills with a track record of motivating teams to meet or exceed sales goals while maintaining high service standards. Exceptional communication skills for negotiating deals, managing client relationships, and coordinating cross-functional teams.
