Job Description

Job Summary:
This position works closely with department managers/buyers and the bookkeeper to ensure accountability for receiving paperwork, pricing and security of inventory for all departments except the prepared foods and produce departments. This position also serves as general back-up, as needed, answering phones, cashiering, helping stock the frozen section on truck days, shoveling snow, and performing other collateral duties as needed.
CHEQUAMEGON CUSTOMER SERVICE AND INTERNAL SERVICE BASICS FOR ALL STAFF
  • Provide excellent customer service for our shoppers, making the customers' needs your priority whenever on the sales floor or answering the phone.
  • Share information with our shoppers about Co-op happenings, educational opportunities, and the benefits of Co-op ownership.
  • Provide excellent internal customer service to all staff members, supporting an attitude of goodwill toward yourself and others.
  • Help create a work environment that is cooperative, fun, productive, and safe, and that focuses on solutions instead of problems.
Essential Responsibilities & Functions Deliveries:
Oversees the following to ensure accuracy & inventory control for all grocery department deliveries:
  • Prepare storage areas for incoming deliveries.
  • Check deliveries to verify piece count and check for obvious damage. Notify department buyer of discrepancies in orders received.
  • Direct unloading for most efficient use of labor.
  • Sign for deliveries with appropriate adjustments noted on invoice.
  • Set aside special orders, match product with special order form and call customers.
  • Break invoices into department categories and route to department buyers.
  • Coordinate returns, ensuring that returned items get back to appropriate suppliers in a timely manner.
  • Expedite stocking of incoming items.
  • Rotate overstock into storage in an orderly fashion.
  • Maintain approximate floor plan in storage area, using location signs as needed.
  • Assist Grocery Manager in ordering from small vendors.
  • Assist Grocery Manager and merchandizer manager with set up and merchandising Co-op Deals.
  • Cross train with department buyers to cover ordering when they are absent.
  • Learn how to use all ordering avenues such as UNFI, scan Genius, email, etc.
Department Maintenance:
  • Oversee stockers in cleaning and maintenance procedures for day and evening shifts.
  • Ensure that retail, recycling and storage areas for all grocery departments are maintained in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department standards.
  • Keep price-marking and case-cutting equipment in working order.
  • Keep track of damage and notify GM and/or Buyer to request credit from suppliers where applicable for returned or low-quality product.
  • Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures. Advise Grocery Manager regarding equipment problems.
  • Participate in quarterly inventory counts.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for safety awareness and always utilizing safe work practices.
  • Attend department meetings.
  • Attend all-staff meetings.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by Grocery Manager.

Physical Job Requirements:

  • Ability to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, telephone, and various office equipment continuously.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently.

  • Ability to push/pull wheeled carts weighing up to 150 pounds.
  • Ability to be present in assigned work area for up to 3 hours without rest.
  • Ability to bend, stop, squat, kneel, climb stairs or ladder.

  • Ability to talk and hear to communicate with customers and co-workers.
  • Finger and hand dexterity with ability to grasp and hold items of different sizers.

  • Ability to read register screen and product and shelf labels.
  • Remain in stationary position while performing cashier duties.
  • Operate box cutter and handcarts.
  • Clearly identify bar codes, shelf tags, expiration dates, and product labels.
  • Distinguish color for quality control; ability to smell products to identify spoilage.

  • Ability to tolerate varying temperatures by working with refrigerated or frozen products.
  • Frequent exposure to cold, hot, wet, or humid conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, hazardous materials ranging from natural to chemical (store products, cleaning products, scents from working in a public setting).
  • Exposure to and potential handling of fresh foods including meats and seafood
  • Handling objects that have been managed by the public.
  • Frequently performs work standing on cement floors at the cash register.
  • May work occasionally in temperature extremes (walk-in freezer, outside warehouse, hot kitchen, etc.).
  • Noise level in the store is usually moderate to loud.
