Position Summary Summary:

The Licensing Manager will work with the Director of Licensing and Commercialization to identify novel inventions for intellectual property protection and seek to commercialize existing intellectual properties. The licensing manager will be involved with license agreements and the identification of interested parties for license agreements. Additionally, the licensing manager will be responsible for researching invention disclosures to identify novelty, patent suitability, and commercialization potential. Essential Functions Work with the Director to understand the research activities throughout UTEP and identify the potential of that research for intellectual property (IP) protection and impact through commercialization. Help streamline the technology commercialization process for inventors by shepherding invention disclosures, patent applications, marketing collateral, term sheets, options, license agreements, and other necessary elements in the technology transfer process. Familiarize the faculty, staff, and students with technology transfer in terms of purpose, intellectual property, process, and commercialization value to the University, inventors, community, and outside agencies. Foster relationships with faculty to make them aware of the commercial potential of their present and future research. Work independently to guide inventors through prior art analysis, marketing and licensing opportunities, and other interactions with the Office of Technology Commercialization. Conduct technology market analysis to understand the novelty of disclosures before applying for Intellectual Property protections. Work with inventors to determine technology milestones, timelines for moving technology into a commercial product, and appropriate IP strategies, and help to assess and prioritize inventions. Conduct marketing and market research to identify potential licensees and contacts within those companies. Negotiate various agreements, including licenses or options for intellectual property rights, and manage ongoing relationships with licensees. Participate in outreach events to promote the Office of Technology Commercialization for commercialization opportunities Knowledge of all Microsoft Office software and able to learn and use institutional software systems. Complies with all State and University policies. Other duties may be assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's objectives, policies and applicable laws. Bachelor's degree and

Experience:

Three (3) years of relevant work experience in technology transfer, technology licensing, business development, contract negotiation, or commercial assessment experience, including the development, preparation, review, or execution of contracts in physical sciences or other science-related domains; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in the physical sciences, business, or other scientific-related field. At least 1 year of work experience in technology licensing, business development, contract negotiation, or commercial assessment experience, including the development, preparation, review, or execution of a wide range of business contracts in physical sciences or other science-related domains. Experience working with researchers, creators, or technical staff in IP matters in related domains in a university or comparable setting. Experience working with intellectual property, specifically patents. Applicants Should Demonstrate General knowledge of intellectual property law, evaluation, and contracts, especially in a university setting. General knowledge of conducting market research analysis and patent viability to produce reports for the basis of pursuing intellectual property Ability to work collaboratively with researchers or technical staff in intellectual property matters. Experience as a team player who seeks and uses effective instruction and advice from professional colleagues. Strong business ethics and service orientation. Strong background in life sciences or biotechnology with experience in connecting with industry partners Superior communication skills, both oral and written.
