The Prince George's County Police Department is seeking qualified applicants to fill multiple part-time S chool Crossing Guard positions, grade X-13, within the Special Operations Division .

About this Position This is specialized work that involves the safe crossing of school children and pedestrians and control of traffic at school or other crossings. Work is to prevent accidents and protect the safety of school children and other pedestrians. The incumbent of this class does not have the authority to arrest but does have the power to perform traffic control operations to ensure the safe flow of vehicles and the movement of pedestrians. Employees must wear a uniform while on assignment and work requires employees to stand, walk, and use arm/hand signals, whistles, and voice.
Please Note:
Applicants MUST be able to work both morning and afternoon shifts for all scheduled hours between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. AND 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Frida y ( each week). This position is permanent part-time, and the hours are not negotiable. School Crossing Guards must have reliable transportation to attend orientation, training, and to the work locations. Applicants must be able accommodate schedule changes due to late arrivals, early dismissals and inclement weather changes. School Work locations are NOT assigned according to where you live, and you must be able to work any assigned location within Prince George's County. Given the nature of the role, with the focus on the safety of children and members of the community, the required work schedule is not flexible. About the Agency The Prince George's County Police Department is the fourth largest law enforcement agency in Maryland, providing a full range of law enforcement services to County residents and business owners. Their mission is to work in partnership with citizens of Prince George's County towards providing a safe environment and enhancing the quality of life. Today, the Prince George's County Police Department serves over 900,000 residents and has an authorized strength of 1800 officers and 300 civilians. Direct or escort school children and other pedestrians to cross the street at the school crossing guard signal and stopping traffic, as necessary. Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at the designated crossing to allow children to cross safely. Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which school children and pedestrians can cross streets. Control the children using the crossing to ensure they conform to traffic regulations. Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to school children and other pedestrians. Report any traffic hazards to the police and or School Crossing Guard Supervisor. Report motorists who fail to comply with provisions of the law governing the movement of vehicular traffic. Appear in court to testify in cases involving violations of law, as needed. Report flagrant traffic violators, accidents, and hazardous conditions to the Supervisor and appropriate school representative(s). Contact school officials regarding school children who will not cooperate and place themselves and others at risk. Willingly and cooperatively perform tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work. Minimum Qualifications Candidates must meet all minimum qualifications listed below to be eligible for additional consideration: High school diploma or GED Must be at least 18 years old at the time of application Must pass the police vision and hearing test and/or other required examinations including drug screening to include marijuana/synthetic cannabis Must be able to report to assigned training sites and school worksites within 1-hour of notification through reliable transportation Must be accessible before and during school hours by phone to respond to scheduling changes Must be willing to work in inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions

Conditions of Employment :
Upon selection, the candidate must: Pass vision and hearing test and/or other required examinations including drug screening Pass a criminal and other preemployment background checks Pass a drug screening, which includes marijuana and synthetic cannabis. Be willing and able to work in multiple and various locations within Prince George's County with short notice. Report to assignments on time and perform assigned duties for the full duration. The School Crossing Guard is a position within Public Safety; therefore, attendance is critical. Schedules and assignments are selected where the need is not the location of the applicant's home, so applicants must be willing to travel. Must be available and willing to attend monthly scheduled meetings such as Roll Call, uniform inspection, or paperwork pick up or drop off Must be available and willing to attend mandatory yearly in-service trainings, which may include some longer training days Be willing to work in inclement weather and/or other adverse conditions Be willing and able to wear the issued uniform Have reliable transportation to report to assigned locations within a one-hour notification period Applicants must be able accommodate schedule changes and be available and present due to late arrivals, early dismissals and inclement weather changes. Work shifts will be assigned; however, candidates must be able to work both shifts between 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. AND 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday every day and any assigned location within Prince George's County.
