Assistant School Nurse Hermitage School District Summary:
It is the position of the National Association of School Nurses that the registered school nurse is the leader in the school community to oversee school health policies and programs. The assistant to the school nurse also serves in this capacity and serves in a pivotal role to provide expertise and oversight for the provision of school health services and promotion of health education for children. The Arkansas Nurse Practice Act authorizes the professional nurse (RN) to provide nursing care. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) provide nursing care under the direction of an RN in the Hermitage School District.
Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program with a valid registered nurse license or Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) license to practice professional nursing in Arkansas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners under the direction of the district registered nurse.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Report to the Hermitage School District Registered Nurse (RN) Provides health-related education to students and staff Participates in the implementation of health education curriculum Serves as a resource person on health issues Serves as a health liaison between school, home, and the community and makes home visits as needed Implements and complies with policies established by federal and state law, Arkansas Department of Education and local board policy in the area of health services Assesses the school environment for safety to prevent injury and spearheading infection control measures Promotes and assists in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Department of Human Services Plans, implements, and supervises health screenings that include vision, hearing, body mass index or other screening procedures Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required Recommends corrective action where problems are identified Corresponds with parents on health needs of children Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies Develops and coordinates a continuing evaluation of the health program and implements changes based on the findings Prepares health reports for supervisor, board of education and health department Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data Maintains, evaluates, and interprets cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of students Keeps a daily log to list those students who visit the nurse's office, or need special attention Reviews student health records and informs school personnel of special health problems and provides faculty with handouts about those specific health problems Participates as the health specialist on the child education evaluation team to develop the health individualized educational plan (I.E.P.) Plans and implements school health management protocols for the child with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication Develops procedures and provides for crises intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances Implements the school medication policy and procedure Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services Develops and enforces procedures for the administration, safety, and security of medications, first aid or health supplies, and equipment Prepares first aid kits for each building Maintains health provider CPR and a nursing license as required by state law The foregoing statements describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this job and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties that may be assigned or skills that may be required.
