The Texas Historical Commission (THC) permits, reviews, and archives archeological survey reports conducted in accordance with the Antiquities Code of Texas and related state and federal regulations. However, THC's electronic records are incomplete and the information from many older survey reports is missing from the TASA . In cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation, THC is undertaking a project to scan and digitize more than 800 bound volumes of archeological survey reports and publish those reports to the TASA. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

OBJECTIVE
Under the direction of the Historian II and the Atlas Program Coordinator, the Archeological Report Processing Specialist performs routine (journey-level) document scanning and digitizing, compiles digitized reports, follows quality assurance and quality control procedures, uploads reports and abstracts to the Texas Archeological Sites Atlas (TASA), and ensures that scanned reports are correctly associated with the corresponding records. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Use a desktop book scanner and related software to scan and digitize bound, hardcopy archeological survey reports and related documents.2. Use Adobe Acrobat and related imaging software to ensure that scanned images are high quality, fully legible, and searchable.3. Compile and organize PDF files including editing documents, merging and splitting documents, and running optical character recognition (OCR) tools.4. Enter data from archeological survey reports into existing inventories and databases of archeological sites, archeological project areas, and archeological report abstracts.5. Import, create, reformat, and process data related to archeological survey reports.6. Provide regular reports to supervisory staff documenting the overall project progress, any challenges faced, and any opportunities for improvement.7. Strictly adhere to all state and federal standards for restricted cultural resources information (RCRI) access.8. Provide consultative and technical assistance to agency staff, governmental agencies, community organizations, consultants, project professionals, and the public.9. Assist THC staff to search and use data from the archeological survey reports.10. Adhere to established work schedule with regular attendance.11. Follow all THC safety guidelines/procedures and ethics requirements.NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
(The application must specifically state how each of the following qualifications are met):- One year of direct experience in the operation of digital imaging equipment, imaging software, document scanners, and reproduction equipment work.
- Proficiency using Adobe Acrobat software to create, edit, and review electronic documents.
- Proficiency using the Microsoft Office software suite, including Word and Excel.
- Proficiency in using web-based maps and geographic information systems to view and search records.
- One year of coursework at an accredited college or university with coursework in anthropology, archeology, history, business or public administration, library methods, or another relevant field.
- Valid driver's license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive a state vehicle.
PREFER:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in anthropology, archeology, history, business or public administration, library methods, or another relevant field.
- Two or more years of direct experience in the operation of digital imaging equipment, imaging software, document scanners, and reproduction equipment work.
- Experience reading, editing, or preparing archeological survey reports.
- Knowledge of professional archeological guidelines and standards, including the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Archeological Documentation and/or the Council of Texas Archeologists' Archeological Survey Standards for Texas.
- Knowledge of Texas restricted cultural resources information (RCRI) standards.
- Work experience using geographic information systems software, including ArcGIS Pro, to create or modify feature-level data.
- Knowledge of Texas history and geography.

Normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer, as needed. May require walking short distances over uneven terrain to retrieve and carry files and archival boxes.MILITARY EMPLOYMENT PREFERENCE
