Job Description

16 Apr 2026 Job Information Organisation/Company CNRS Department Laboratoire de physique des 2 infinis - Irène Joliot-Curie Research Field Physics Researcher Profile First Stage Researcher (R1) Application Deadline 6 May 2026 - 23:59 (UTC) Country France Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Hours Per Week 35 Offer Starting Date 1 Oct 2026 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Not funded by a EU programme Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No Offer Description The Irène Joliot-Curie Physics Laboratory of 2 Infinities (IJCLab) is a UMR under the supervision of the CNRS (IN2P3), the University of Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris is located on the campus of the University of Paris -Saclay in Orsay. The laboratory is located on the campus of the Université Paris-Sud, Université Paris-Saclay in Orsay. The campus is located 20 km south of Paris and easily accessible by RER in 35 minutes. IJCLab was born in 2020 from the merger of five units (CSNSM, IMNC, IPN, LAL, LPT). The staff is made up of nearly 560 permanent (340 engineers, technicians and administrators and 220 researchers and teacher-researchers) and approximately 200 non-permanent including 120 doctoral students. The research themes of the laboratory are nuclear physics, high energy physics, theoretical physics, astroparticles, astrophysics and cosmology, particle accelerators, energy and the environment and health. IJCLab has very significant technical capacities (around 280 IT) in all the major fields required to design, develop / implement the experimental devices necessary for its scientific activity, as well as the design, development and use of instruments. . The phD student will work in the NESTAR team of the Nuclear Physics Pôle of the Laboratory which is involved in the study of Exotic Nuclei, Structure, Astrophysics and Reactions. The group includes around 15 physicists (permanent researchers, post-docs and doctoral students). The evolution of nuclear structure and cross sections at the Z frontier of the periodic table is one of the key questions currently being addressed by the scientific community. The existence of the heaviest superheavy elements (SHE), such as Z=119-120, and the pathways by which they are produced are being actively investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The study of neutron-rich nuclei of relatively lower Z is equally interesting and challenging. These nuclei are less likely to be populated by fusion-evaporation, the standard method of SHE production, but are predicted to be more favorably populated by the multi-nucleon transfer (MNT) reaction. The objective is to study the mechanism of the MNT reaction and its ability to produce heavy nuclei that are different and richer in neutrons compared to the fusion-evaporation reaction. This study will be carried out in collaboration with the CEA/IRFU and GANIL. The study focuses on proposals accepted at GANIL ( https://www.ganil-spiral2.eu/ ) and Legnaro ( https://www . lnl.infn.it/) on the study of heavy nucleus production in the 232Th + 96Zr and 238U+64Ni reactions to be studied with VAMOS ( https://www.ganil-spiral2.eu/scientists/ganil-spiral -2-facilities/experimental-areas/g1- vamos/) in coincidence with the EXOGAM gamma spectrometer ( https://www.ganil-spiral2.eu/scientists/ganil-spiral-2-facilities/instr… ) and with PRISMA ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/ S0375947404002398) in conjunction with AGATA ( https://www.agata.org ). This measurement campaign will be carried out in 2026 and 2027 using the best instruments available today worldwide for this type of study. The PhD student will play a crucial role in preparing the campaign at GANIL, analyzing data, presenting the results in international conference and publishing the results as part of a broad international collaboration. The thesis is financed by in2p3.
