Charleston, South Carolina Laboratory Clinical & Research Support Services Full Time University (UNIV) Job Description Summary The department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at MUSC has an opening for a motivated and collegial Research Assistant in the laboratory of Dr. Jessica Hartman. The Hartman lab focuses on the impact of lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise on metabolism, with a special focus on the mammalian enzymecytochromeP450 2E1
(CYP2E1). The lab uses the model organism C. elegans (a microscopic roundworm), as well as mammalian cell culture and rodent models. We are looking for a candidate with excellent organizational skills, prior experience in a laboratory environment, and the ability to work well on a fast-paced and high-performing team. Previous experience in the relevant models is appreciated, but not required. Training will be provided in all aspects of the work. (20%) Performs mammalian tissue culture Grows, maintains, expands, and treats mammalian cell lines Develops, evaluates and implements new or modified culture procedures Improves laboratory methods of primary tissue culture (20%) Performs DNA/RNA/Protein analysis Extracts DNA/RNA/Protein from mammalian cells/tissues. Analyzes DNA/RNA/Protein by PCR, Northern Blot, and Western Blot (20%) Performs C. elegans culture Grows, maintains, expands, and treats worm lines Develops, evaluates and implements new or modified culture procedures Improves laboratory methods of worm culture (15%) Prepares laboratory records Prepares daily records of experimental procedures and results (10%) Assist DLAR with maintenance of mouse colony Manage mouse colony numbers and supervise breeding schedules PCR genotyping of mice tail clippings Assist animal experiments for other lab members (10%) Prepares laboratory records and maintain laboratory supplies Orders and places laboratory supplies (5%) Upon request, performs other tasks requested by faculty to maintain a smooth operation of laboratory Performs collaborations with inside and outside colleaguesMinimum Requirements:
Required to have a minimum Bachelor's degree in Biology or related subjects. Preferred to have Master's degree or previous research experience in mouse breeding and colony maintenance.Additional Job Description Minimum Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.Physical Requirements:
