Summer Field Research Technician Salary range: The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year Non-Exempt. A reasonable estimate for this position is an hourly rate of $26.35 •(based on an annual salary of $55,000). Percent time: Initial appointment will be made at 50% time. However, the percentage may fluctuate between 40-60% based on the available work. Anticipated start: As soon as June 1, 2026. POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Weiss lab in the Micobiology and Environmental Toxicology Department is seeking a field technician to visit and maintain two field sites in the Monterey Bay area during the summer of 2026 for a fog water sample collection campaign. The Weiss lab specializes in chemical and biological analysis of fog water and other atmospheric media like aerosol particles. Under the supervision of Dr. Peter Weiss, the junior specialist will be responsible for visiting the fog collector sites on a set schedule in the morning hours, retrieve fog water and aerosol filter samples and reload samplers with new bottles and new filters, and clean fog water collector according to a procedure. Duties will also include splitting samples into different aliquots for the different tests, preserving each aliquot according to a procedure, document information into the online notebook, and have regular online or in person meetings with the Dr. Weiss. The position requires that the incumbent have experience involving attention to detail, organization, and strong analytical skills in a laboratory setting The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position. Experience working in a lab or field setting with equipment and tools.
