In this role, you will be responsible for the care, handling, and monitoring of bat populations to support ecological studies and conservation efforts. Your expertise will help ensure the health and safety of these unique mammals while contributing to important scientific data. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to work outdoors, engage in hands-on animal care, and support vital environmental projects. Responsibilities Assist with the set-up, monitoring, and safe capture of bats using mistnets.
If rabies vaccinated:
Assist with the safe handling and data measurments of each bat captured. Conduct health assessments, including visual inspections and physical examinations, to monitor bat well-being Maintain detailed records of bat captures, health status, and treatment history in accordance with research guidelines Support habitat assessments of survey areas including environmental conditions during field surveys Follow strict aseptic techniques prior to, during, and after surveys to prevent contamination and reduce risks of the spread of White-nose syndrome Skills Experience working in the field at night in remote locations. Job requires at times extensive hiking off trail through thick brush, forests, bottomland swamps, and mountainous terrain during day and night. Applicant must be adept at navigating multiple wildlife encounters including but not limited to venomous snakes, stinging insects, and ticks.
Preferred but not required:
Rabies vaccinations Preferred but not required: skilled in small animal handling, safe restraint, and data collection/measurement of animals Preferred but not required: radio telemetry knowledge for tracking endangered bats during the day to locate roosts.
