Start times will vary with tasks; office days start at 8:30 am and field days can start as early as 5:00 am. Employee will be given advanced notice of all scheduled field work. Employee must be comfortable working on boats, including in adverse weather conditions. Employee must be comfortable communicating with the public. The general duties of a Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 in the Division of Marine Resources is to assist biologists to promote the protection, management, and restoration of New York State's marine species and these species' habitats.
Tasks could include:
1.
Fisheries independent sampling:
a.

Participate in field work to collect data and/or samples for future analysis (handling dead or live organisms may be required) b.

QA/QC data and enter data into a database c.

Process and analyze samples in a laboratory setting d.

Maintain equipment and supplies 2.Fisheries dependent sampling program. a.

Participation in fishery tagging and data collection programs. b.

Communication with commercial and recreational fishing stakeholders c.

Process Vessel Trip Report (VTR) and angler fishing log data d.

QA/QC data and enter data into Access database. 3.Assistance in the protection of public health by monitoring the sanitary status of local shellfish growing areas a.collection of water and shellfish samples b.assisting in the monitoring of harmful algal blooms 4.Assist with other Division projects as needed. 5.Occasional office duties such as answering phones, mailings, filing Minimum Qualifications30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography. Additional CommentsMust have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
