PHYSICAL WORK ADDRESS

DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Ecosystem Leader, this position performs fish and wildlife conservation work including assisting in the collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data in the Lower Laguna Madre ecosystem and nearshore Gulf of America. Operates equipment safely. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

NOTE (1): Please submit official copies of college transcripts with application if applicable.

NOTE (2): A skills demonstration may be required as part of the interview.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduation from High School or GED.
Experience:
Fish and Wildlife Technician I(a): No experience required.

Fish and Wildlife Technician I(b): Two years of relevant experience required related to the specific duties of the position.
Fish and Wildlife Technician II:
Four years of relevant experience required related to the specific duties of the position.
Licensure:
Must possess or be able to obtain, within thirty days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.
NOTE:
Retention of position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.
ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS
Experience (FWT I(b) and FWT II):

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Fisheries Biology, Marine Biology, or closely related field may be substituted for two years of required experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Two years of relevant experience.

Experience navigating vessels in shallow bay systems.

Experience working on vessels in the Gulf of America or other large bodies of water.

Experience constructing, using, and maintaining specialized fisheries-sampling gears such as seines, nets, trawls, and oyster dredges.

Experience with basic boat and outboard motor repair and maintenance.
Licensure:
Possession of U.S.C.G. Captain's License or similar boating safety license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Fish and Wildlife Technician IKnowledge of common Texas marine organisms.

Knowledge of Texas commercial and recreational fisheries.

Knowledge of Texas coastal ecosystems.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturday, Sunday and holidays as needed.

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

Required to work overtime as necessary.

Required to perform work in water-based field activities, including work aboard seagoing vessels in the inshore bays and nearshore Gulf.

Required to perform work outdoors in extreme temperatures and occasionally adverse weather conditions.

Required to wade in water and deep mud, and walk over rough, uneven, and slippery surfaces or bay bottoms.

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures.

May be required to operate a State vehicle.

Non-smoking environment in all state buildings and vehicles.
