Newport Bay Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving Upper Newport Bay and its watershed through restoration, education, research, and advocacy. The organization engages hundreds of volunteers annually in habitat restoration and stewardship efforts throughout the Bay. Position Summary Newport Bay Conservancy (NBC) is seeking a Restoration Intern who will support the implementation and success of NBC's Lower Constellation Coastal Sage Scrub and High Marsh Restoration Project. This role assists with habitat restoration activities including restoration site preparation, invasive species management, native plant propagation, volunteer support, and community outreach. This role reports to the Habitat Restoration Manager and Restoration Coordinator. This position is ideal for a student or early-career professional interested in habitat restoration, wetland ecology, conservation, and community-based environmental work. Primary Responsibilities ? Support volunteer restoration events through volunteer guidance and field preparation ? Conduct invasive plant removal using hand tools and approved restoration methods ? Support installation and maintenance of restoration plantings ? Participate in habitat assessments and restoration site inspections ? Coordinate outreach to local schools and assist with planning and implementation of environmental education ? Collect field data using ArcGIS Field Maps or similar software ? Support native plant nursery operations, propagation, and related tasks Minimum Qualifications ? Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, or related field ? Interest in habitat restoration and conservation ? Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions ? Reliable transportation Preferred Qualifications ? Native and invasive plant identification experience ? Volunteer leadership experience ? Data collection experience ? Coursework in botany, ecology, restoration, or GIS ? Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps, Canva, or Google Sheets ? CPR/First Aid Certification Location & Physical Requirements ? The position is based at the Back Bay Science Center (600 Shellmaker Road, Newport Beach, CA 92660) and will require travel to restoration sites throughout Upper Newport Bay (primarily Constellation Dr, Newport Beach, CA 92660). This position cannot be performed remotely. ? Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve hiking on uneven terrain, exposure to sun and weather conditions, and work in muddy environments. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, hike, and safely use hand tools and field equipment. What You'll Gain ? Hands-on experience in coastal habitat restoration ?
