Assistant Biologist 1 - $43.60 Role Overview The Assistant Biologist I is an entry level professional biologist position that supports ecological investigations, biological surveys, and environmental compliance activities. The role is heavily field oriented (approximately 75% field / 25% office) and focuses on conducting pre construction and vegetation management surveys, collecting biological data, and assisting higher level biologists to ensure compliance with CEQA, NEPA, and other environmental regulations. Key Responsibilities Conduct biological field surveys prior to or during construction and vegetation management activities. Perform pre construction surveys, including: Nesting bird surveys Amphibian night surveys Vegetation mapping and identification Fish relocations and salmonid redd surveys Assist with ecological monitoring, mitigation monitoring, and site assessments. Collect, document, and summarize biological field data. Prepare work clearances, assemble survey work packets, and support compliance documentation. Assist in identifying sensitive species, habitats, and potential biological impacts. Maintain, inspect, and organize biological field equipment. Follow all safety policies and serve as a disaster service worker when required. Perform related duties as assigned under close supervision.
Required Experience Required:
Entry level experience performing biological work with a significant amount of field exposure, which may include internships, temporary assignments, or early professional roles. Hands on experience assisting with biological surveys and environmental data collection. Ability to work full time and conduct physically demanding fieldwork in varying environmental conditions.
Preferred:
Prior experience with local flora and fauna, particularly special status species native to Santa Clara County. Exposure to environmental compliance work related to construction or maintenance projects. Familiarity with
CEQA/NEPA
concepts (academic or practical). Experience supporting qualified biologists or multidisciplinary environmental teams. Required Skills Technical Skills Biological survey techniques and Best Management Practices (BMPs). Species identification (flora and fauna). Field data collection, quality control, and documentation. Basic GIS/GPS skills (ArcMap knowledge helpful). Report writing and technical documentation. Use of common desktop applications (email, word processing, spreadsheets). Understanding of environmental databases (e.g., CNDDB, CNPS Electronic Inventory - introductory level).
Soft Skills:
Strong attention to detail and observational skills. Ability to follow explicit instructions and work under close supervision. Clear written and verbal communication. Time management and organizational skills, especially for survey preparation and reporting. Willingness to learn regulations, permit conditions, and new field methodologies. Ability to work independently in the field while maintaining communication with supervisors. Team collaboration and professionalism in field and office settings.
Education / Certifications
Education (Required): Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in: Biology Ecology Botany Zoology or a related life sciences field. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for required experience. Valid California Driver's License may be required when driving is an essential function of the assignment.
